Album Stream: Night Helix ‘Guttoral EP’

Here’s a little something different.

Night Helix, the recording name of artist Ben Ross Davis, is an audio project influenced by dark disco, industrial, and house. Ben splits his time between Brooklyn and Berlin which is quite evident in this three-track EP we have the pleasure of streaming below.

Each track — “Guttoral,” “Transplant,” and “Found My Face” — was written, produced, and recorded in Berlin, and eventually mixed and mastered by Shareef Islam in NYC. “Guttoral,” the album’s title track, is Donna Summer meets industrial, driven by vacillating synth riffs and a repetitious, reverb-laced vocal refrain. “Transplant” falls more in-line with house a la its thumping bass and drums and spoke word lyrics about Ben’s adventures in Berlin, which include meeting with his good friend Roi, dancing while producing the album, and watching horror movies. Continuing this theme of terror and fear, “Found My Face” is a dark disco track that Ben admits to being influenced by the ’90s Super Nintendo Game Zombies Ate My Neighbors (stellar choice) and that it has beats/noises heavily influenced by those found in-game.

On thing’s for sure — this tight, pumping foray into the electronic music substratum makes for a killer debut, and we can’t wait to see what awesome work Night Helix could do on a full-length.
