Art Cures: Cabin Fever

Art Cures, our new series, offers a themed list of music, films, books, events and other cool stuff in hopes of supplying you with a sufficient art fix, as well as the cures you didn’t know you needed. So whether you’re reeling from a recent break-up, seeking inspiration for your creative block, or just needing a change of scenery, these lists will help raise your spirits and remedy your ills.

It’s finally upon us! The season of spending all of your hard-earned money on gifts and a heightened electric bill, answering your Great Aunt Mabel’s constant inquiries as to why you’re still single and live with four roommates and three cats, and enduring the sonic assault of holiday tunes. But the worst is surely being stuck inside with family members, or being apartment-bound by your lonesome after your roommates and friends have gone home for the holidays. If you’re about to experience either the former or the latter, here are some things to see and do.

  • Listen to “Thanksgiving, 1999,” a rad mix created by Alien Tapes, which features tracks from artists like Elf Power, Superchunk and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Even if you were actually listening to NSYNC and/or Limp Bizkit in the 90’s, it’ll make you smile with nostalgia.

  • No Thanksgiving plans? No problem! Post up at Videology because they’re showing classic madness flick The Shining. On a loop. All day. For free. Fill up on cider and watch that crazy Jack Torrance lose his damn mind.

  • Sure, your family might bombard you with boring questions about your job (or lack of one) and information they learned from the lovely people over at FOX news, but they aren’t that bad! Revisit our list of the worst movie families and feel appreciative for yours.

  • Watch the adorable video Grimes and some of her relatives created last Christmas as a way of avoiding their family dinner. I think the majority of us are incapable of making anything this cool at home on a whim, but we can dream.

  • Relive the gang’s awkward playing of Never Have I Ever and Abbi’s spite-eating of too-much potato salad after everyone gets stuck inside during “Hurricane Wanda” from the first season of Broad City. Jaimé’s random and non-sensical confessions are the best.
