It’s been over four years since we last heard from Long Beach’s Avi Buffalo. Apart from a brief 7″ single release in 2011, the band has been relatively quiet since they dropped their excellent self-titled debut — a collection of twinkling pop gems that have stood the test of time. But, as of yesterday, they’ve finally returned with a new single and the announcement of their sophomore album, At Best Cuckhold, out September 9 via Sub Pop.
“So What” is our first taste of the release — an absolute earworm that barrels along and never overstays its welcome. Singer Avi Zahner-Isenberg provides more of his relentlessly introspective lyrics, blissfully singing, “I’m only waiting for the star collector to come and sweep me right up off my feet / Once something happened to me in the meantime, I guess I never got a chance at death,” before quickly admitting “and that’s complaining too much.” And though the self-examination on “So What” lacks the sense of despondency found on their first record, with a title like At Best Cuckhold, I’d expect more of that to peek through on this release. For now, this is an upbeat twee popper that just radiates summer vibes. Check it out below:
