Brian’s List: Week of 11/20

BRIAN’S LIST: SHOWCASING THE BEST DEALS AND INTERESTING FINDS IN MUSICAL EQUIPMENT IN NEW YORK CITY.

Brian’s List came into fruition after years of helping friends and fellow musicians find deals on gear while seeing amazing pieces of equipment sit unnoticed for months and months as the seller struggles to find a buyer. Originally a tumblr page, Brian’s List is delighted to be now living on Alt Citizen. A lover of old guitars, amps and rock ‘n’ roll culture; Brian hopes to share his love and knowledge with as many people as possible. Look out for weekly updates on all of New York City’s coolest and affordable gear for the working musician!

1950s Gretsch Snare Drum 3 ply – $295

Made in Brooklyn back when Eisenhower was in office and a burger was 10 cents. This beautiful black lacquered snare is in GREAT shape. Features original Gretsch Responso 16 strand wires and 302 double flange rims!

Measures: 5.5 in. height x 14 in. Wide

Location: Downtown Manhattan

Go inside the Gretsch Factory and see how their drums are made these days:

1965 Vintage Sekova “Big Horn” – $450

Nice example of a Japanese spin-off of a cult classic guitar. This one is in excellent shape and the price reflects that – it’s a bit steep but seller is open to trades. Don’t see too many of these around and this one features 2 gold foil pickups that Ry Cooder popularized.

No mention of a case so come prepared it’s getting cold out there!

Location: Manhattan

There is some debate about Dearmond gold foil pickups vs the Tesco “black” foil pickups like the ones in this guitar. Learn more about why they ARE sonically identical here.

ATA PORTABLE CASES- $125

Protect your gear from the trial of travel, weather and those idiots in your practice space who can’t stop playing your amp. Here are a bunch of cases for outboard gear and look like they could fit some combo amps. These bad boys are in solid shape and retail for $300+

Constructed with 3/4 birch ply and come with heavy duty castors, handles and covers.
19″ wide by approx 20″ deep

Location: Staten Island

If road cases aren’t your style I always recommend a nice padded cover for your amp. Studio Slips make some really solid stuff and have all kinds of sizes.

Tips: Find something on Brian’s List but the link has since expired?  This doesn’t mean the item has been sold.  It just means the seller did not repost the item in time.  If it is an item you are really excited about; search craigslist for it using bold terms (model name etc).  It could have been reposted under a different link or a new post altogether (updated pics, info etc.)  If it is not sold it will pop up again in the next few days.  Don’t sweat it.

In the case of something you are seriously considering, it’s good to make initial contact with the seller even if you can’t immediately purchase the item or make it out to where ever it is located right away.  This could help you too build a relationship with the seller and he/she may hold it for you over someone else until you are ready.  But as we all know- CASH IS KING.
