Coming in like a cool breeze, stylish new post-punk outfit Catcher have made their entry into the Brooklyn music scene. Previously playing together in Sadie and the Ladies, Austin Eicher (vocals), Wilson Chestney (drums), and Cameron McRae (bass) honed in on their new sound (and their shared Tinder profile made in hopes of finding a guitarist) during lockdown. The result is brooding and entrancing, but still willing to burst out the crashing cymbals and up your heart rate.
The band recently put out two new singles encapsulating their new sound and vision. On “Yesterday’s Favorite” the tone is set with propelling drum and bass as Eicher’s roughed up drawl weaves three separate, but connected, narratives, as if reflecting on these memories at the end of his life. The concept was inspired by his experience as a caretaker for elderly patients who have dementia. “The Skin” has a more hypnotic quality to it — putting the listener under a spell and setting them free into reckless abandon with the rattle of a tambourine.
You can catch the band live and in person to see what the buzz is all about at Gold Sounds on May 15 — you can purchase tickets here. And be sure to keep up with the band on Instagram and Spotify.
