New York, NY [September 30, 2015] – Alt Space is pleased to present Tight in a Bud, Cheryl Georgette’s first solo exhibition featuring innovative live music photography, collage, and mixed media. Edited using analog techniques and developed in a dark room, these portraits depicts the raw energy of live performance. There will be an opening reception at Alt Space (41 Montrose Avenue, Brooklyn) on October 9 from 7 to 9pm, and the show will run from Oct 9th to Oct 23rd.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”― Anaïs Nin

As head photo editor at Alt Citizen, Georgette has created iconic images highlighting the counterculture focus of our publication. Photographing the likes of Julian Casablancas +The Voidz (of The Strokes), Mac Demarco, and John Cooper Clarke, Georgette is known for her images of prominent creators of our DIY generation in intimate settings. In her solo exhibition, Tight in a Bud creates similar unique and iconic images that inspire photographic ingenuity. Her solo exhibition will showcase hand-painted gelatin silver prints, gelatin silver prints (unpainted), and mixed media collages featuring artists such as HO99O9, Eartheater, Dawn of Humans, Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, No Parents, Raw Distraction, Mykki Blanco, and JD Samson. While her photography is often rooted in a documentary style, she transcends expectations to redefine what live music photojournalism can be.

By framing and manipulating her subjects with collage and paint, Cheryl pays homage to independent artists, their commitment to the craft, and how one creates compelling experiences with few resources. And though her compositions — sweaty, unfiltered glimpses into the serendipitous present — capture the crescendo of real-time, artistic expression, they also enhance and glorify it, hypnotizing the viewer with her interpretation the by-gone performance, her participation in it, and the dynamics that permeated throughout.
