Dance remixes of rock tunes used to be fairly common around the turn of the millennium, breaking down the boundaries of the underground into an endlessly inclusive bouillabaisse of late night revelry. Originally nestled on the b-side of a split 7” with Le Butcherettes, Death Valley Girls’ “When I’m Free” gets the full-on indie sleaze treatment from the legendary Peaches, transforming the heady posi-psych track into a wild, dancefloor-ready banger designed to exercise the spirit as much as the body.
At first blush this team up may seem unlikely, but Peaches and Death Valley Girls inherently operate within an overlapping space of creative expression. Both artists have built a name for themselves by embodying an ethos of personal empowerment through unflinching honesty and unbridled creativity. Perhaps that’s why it’s ultimately no surprise “When I’m Free” works so well with a new beat; freedom of self and freedom of expression are not mutually exclusive and fit together as neatly as interlaced fingers holding hands.
