ICYMI: Fool’s Gold Day Off Recap + Interviews

This past Labor Day hundreds of bright eyed twenty-somethings filled 50 Kent in Williamsburg to soak in the last festival of the summer, Fools Gold Day Off , hosted by Fools Gold Records. Headliners included Danny Brown, French Montana and A-Trak, but the real hype revolved around surprise guests like Remy Ma, Cam’ron, Dame Dash, Just Blaze, ILoveMakonnen and of course, Bobby Shmurda.  Okay, I’ll stop name dropping now.

Festival go-ers had access to Brooklyn beer, an array of food trucks, $5 Fools Gold bandanas and the chance to brush shoulders with most of the artists that performed that day.  We got the chance to interview the Queens hip hop collective Worlds Fair and LA based DJ Hoodboi inside Danny Browns dark trailer, which was filled with VIP guests, managers and groupies before each of their sets. Ah, what a life.

Meet DJ Hoodboi & Falcon

So this is your first time here?

I’ve been here about a year ago actually. I came to play but it was like 40-50 people maybe.  Nothing like this.

So you are just getting off your tour with A-track in Asia. What was it like touring there?

It was maybe a week and a half tour. That was my second international tour but this one was incomparable. I mean it was a lot more lavish — you can pretty much guess that A-Trak’s lifestyle is a lot different than normal people.

Was there one memorable part of that tour that really stood out?

I think the first show, it was in Bali, and on the beach there was a giant pool in the front. It was a huge pool party,  there were like 1500 people there. It was the most tropical setting I’ve ever played in. The last one was in Tokyo and I’ve always wanted to go there, I’ve always been interested in the culture. And there were a lot of people who came to see me. It was cool to see people that knew my stuff.

What are you working on next?

I am about to go on tour with Dillon Francis in November. It will be my first bus tour. I’ll be on a bus for about a month. I’m looking forward to it.

Traveling is cool, but airports and going through security and waking up hella early every morning is not fun.

How did your name become a part of your identity?

I don’t know. I really needed a name. I lived downtown for a while and I was living more toward the skidrow hood area sooo…

Hoodboi,  that makes sense.

Yeah. I wouldn’t call my neighborhood hood, I’m not hood at all. I never really took it seriously until like I was putting songs on Soundcloud and then I went with it.

We have a crew called Athletixx: it’s me, Falcon, Promnite and Kittens. We just put out  a mixtape about a month ago. We put it together and hopefully we will do more releases soon. Hopefully we will start doing sets,  back to back to back with all four of us.

Falcon: We are going to start throwing warehouse parties in LA late September, early October.

And you go on tour in November? Wow. you are going to be busy.

Yeah, its never going to stop.  Shout out to ATHLETIXX.

Who do you really want to work with in the future?

The first person I think of would be Jeremih. That would be like a dream come true.

What music was playing in your house when you were growing up?

To be honest I listened to a lot of progressive rock jazz, I never listened to electronic music until maybe about high school. I used to be in  band. We used to play jazzy math rock stuff.

Falcon: Swag.

My mom is Mexican and she listens to a lot of salsa mariachi stuff.

Does your mom like your music?

Um she supports it. Like she’s on Facebook everyday re-posting and liking events I am attending.

Parents should just not be on FB.

I actually don’t mind it. I think its funny.

Falcon: It keeps a natural filter on shit, like you cant get too rachet.

Yeah, I can’t be too rachet on Facebook.

Falcon: Download the free mix tape!

Meet Worlds Fair

So, everyone is from Queens right?

Yea, well Reni is adopted. We adopted him from the Bronx.

When did you guys get together and start making music?

2010. We’ve been friends since god knows when, and it’s been like 24/7. We all put solo projects out before doing anything with Worlds Fair. I think it was on everyone’s second project that we were all just like, let’s just do shit together, let’s just roll together, let’s just make music together… and there was nothing from Queens.  Like there was us, Action, Mayhem….Well, its not like there weren’t things going on in Queens but nobody cared.

Why do people care now? What’s changing?

Our group’s place was to shed light on the talent in Queens. I think Action helped. I also think that New York changed. What’s the term? Brooklyn is the new Manhattan, Manhattan is the new Queens and Queens in the new Brooklyn.  Think about it, it’s deep.

What’s the difference, you think, between hip-hop in Brooklyn and hip-hop in Queens?

People from Brooklyn, they have an infamy you know, no matter where in Brooklyn you are from. You tell someone you are from Brooklyn and they are like… OKAY, I’m not going to fuck with you. You tell people you are from Queens and they don’t know anything. They are like 50 Cent?? Queens Blvd.? That’s it.

I think what we have is an advantage.  Being from Queens is that it’s a melting pot and that you can see fucking every single race, on every block, and that’s what makes up Worlds Fair…. Sometimes we cook for each other, like it’s a very cultural group. We are like a “What the Fuck” of cultures.

But that’s what Queens is. I think if people look into what the group is they will see a reflection of Queens. We are literally the physical embodiment of Queens…. We don’t have a Greek in the group though — we need one of those.

What has been the craziest show you performed at?

Craziest shit was probably Texas.

What city?

Austin, SXSW. We can’t really talk about it though. I’m sorry but it’s crazy to the point where we cant even speak of it!

If there was one female hip-hop artist you would want to work with in the future who would it be?

NICKI! DUH! QUEENS!  I want to work with her, I want to take her to dinner, I want to pick her brain…

I want to work with Sade. Well everyone wants to work with Sade.

What are you guys working on now?

Solo projects. But no one cares.

People care! Our friends. Our shows are full of each other. We used to perform at shit places like Fat Baby.

I liked those shows! Those shows were fun!

I love playing the smaller shows, cause that shit made us who we are.

When we made that music, no one caught on except for our friends. Now it’s like our friends and women… and NAS
