ICYMI: Mamalarky, CHAII, Osees

ICYMI is a series featuring new and notable releases you (and we) may have missed

“You Make Me Smile” – Mamalarky

The newest video from Fire Talk signees Mamalarky looks like a 70s cinematic daydream. “You Make Me Smile” starts off with the strong sentiment “Every voice I know, somehow sounds like you” — immediately putting into the mind-frame of singer/guitarist Livvy Bennett. While strong feelings of infatuation can often be indicative of a downturn or less sunny outlook on the object of your affections after an encounter has gone sour, “You Make Me Smile” exists in a more dizzying and euphoric place.

“Look at Me” – CHAII

This gives me really strong M.I.A x Santagold x Sohodolls vibes. Definitely good strutting down the street music to make you feel like a bad bitch.

“Cut It Loose” – Maxband

“Cut It Loose”, the latest single from New York project Maxband, instantly takes me back to when Phoenix and Franz Ferdinand were running shit. It’s nostalgic, poppy, with almost a Yeah Yeah Yeahs tinge to it. Not what you’d expect from the drummer of Parquet Courts, but he’s definitely involved, I promise.

Metamorphosed — Osees, Thee Oh Sees

Until we get live music back, this will certainly inject some sort of that same thrill into your veins. The album has short, flash in the pan type bangers along with lengthy jam-session-like tracks, both of which were remains from Protean Threat out earlier this year. “I Got a Lot” is a little too manic for me in these times, but “Electric War” is a new classic for the band as far as I’m concerned.

“Suspended” – The Muckers

Speaking of live music, definitely missing seeing The Muckers live. Thankfully, they’re putting out not only sick new track “Suspended” this month, but there’s more to come. This is for you rock n roll purists — enjoy.
