Interview with KB Cabala of La Hell Gang and Chicos de Nazca

Interview by Jackie Green

It’s no secret that Chile is a gold mine for psych music. Demonstrating this properly are bands such as The Holydrug Couple, Föllakzoid, The Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane, among others. Two of my personal favorites, La Hell Gang and Chicos de Nazca, are fronted by KB Cabala and hail from Santiago, Chile. I wanted to know more about these bands, so I decided to drop KB a line (in his language). Reading and translating his replies from Spanish to English, I was reminded that music is the universal language. We were really speaking the same language the whole time.

When did you realize that you were in love with music?

Since I was a kid, I listened to a lot of rock in my family and friends, 60s, Jimi Hendrix was who I liked best when I was around 11-12 years old. During those times, I received my first guitar as a gift from my dad – but I was 15 years old when I decided to write themes and I started a band with my friend Vicente (from the band Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane) and we created “Cindy Sisters” in 2005. Then I decided music was what I had to do in life and I never studied anything, I just make music.

What does music do for you as a human being?

Music is what fills my spirit the most, together with the love of a woman – they go together. It’s a form of expressing the changes that occur in your head and the feelings that you come with time.

As a group, or band, how has your process of writing an album or your live improvisation changed?

Writing for an album, principally the songs are born as jams, as much as with the band or playing alone with the guitar. Almost always songs change each time they’re played, we like improvising a lot, it’s the grace of playing live.

To me, your music seems like it’s driven by an ‘intangible’ force –a force or feeling that’s directing the sound. What effects, musical techniques, or recording processes help capture these feelings directing the music? Do you ever feel limited by the equipment available in actualizing your visions?

It’s easy with guitar to arrive at different feelings without having a lot of equipment, with just guitar you can satisfy the objective, and with pedals you can fill the spaces or arrive at a higher sound through feedback. I haven’t felt limited, rather the opposite – I think there are an abundance of tools with the electric guitar.

Have you discovered a method or new equipment that has inspired you recently?

No, all my equipment is old, amplifier, guitar, pedals – all are models from the 60s. To record, I use different tape machines, I like the way old stuff was made, all types of old pedals, amplifiers, guitars, tape machines, etc. There was more dedication before and the importance on sound, more than mass production.

Do you think that music adheres to a temporal path? For example, a lot of times I discover a band from the 60s or 70s, but I discover them now and they influence me now. It doesn’t matter that their ‘big moment’ was 50 years in the past. Do you value the importance of constantly discovering music that was ‘lost’ in forming the music of today?

Of course, there’s a lot of music to discover and this nourishes the unconscious, or music that you used to listen to a while ago, and it inspired you again, this happened to me with the music of the 60s, I listen to a lot to one disc until it bores me and years later I love it again, the music goes with the time and it’s a cycle. Sometimes, you don’t know why but you need to listen to a disc that you forgot about for a while.

What do you think of the position of Chilean music in the world – do you think that het Chilean voice is bigger now than in the past?

Chile in the 60s brought a really good musical scene, until the coup** came and killed everyone, but bands like Los Vidrios Quebrados, Los Macs, Los Sicodelicos, Los Jockers, and Los High Bass etc. brought good music, but Chile was in a precarious position at this time. Today there are a lot of bands, but not a lot that play that I like, or with as much impact as before.  Now is the mark of Ignacio “Nes” Rodriguez (drummer of La Hell Gang and Chicos de Nazca) and BYM Records, where there are good bands and it’s more focused on psychedelic.

For you, what makes a good live show? How do you want the audience to feel when they go to your shows?

A good live show happens when the band achieves a connection and when it produces a risk in the form of playing, rather than playing controlled. How, for example, Hendrix was totally an experience live because he risked and went further and further. The same as how Bob Dylan, within his calm, or the Velvet Underground, the risksarrive at theunexpected.

Jackie: ¿Que sigue ahora para La Hell Gang?

What’s next for La Hell Gang?

Now we are starting to record another album, in a different way, since I live in Berlin and the other 2 live in Chile. Recording separated by the distance and also other sections that we reach to record together, I think that it will be ready in April. Also we will tour Europe in September-October. At the same time I have been recording as Chicos de Nazca, in a studio in Berlin and now I am putting together an analog studio in Berlin.
