Listen: Ariel Pink “Black Ballerina”

Ariel Pink is back with new music from his forthcoming solo effort, pom pom, and it’s safe to say that things have gotten a lot weirder since 2012’s Mature Themes. “Black Ballerina” is the second taste of the aforementioned double album and forgoes the straightforward lo-fi pop sound of many of his recent singles by focusing primarily on the rigid synth beat that backs his intermittent singing. A vocal exchange between a pirate, stripper, and unassuming patron named Billy makes up the narrative in the song — an odd choice given Pink’s recent string of misogynistic comments. But Pink holds his own on the track, making up for the lack of his full Haunted Graffiti band by adding an extra dose of his beta male weirdness. Check it out below.

pom pom is out November 11 in the U.S. via 4AD.
