Listen: Baths “Ocean Death”

Will Wiesenfeld has come a long way from the starchy pop of Cerulean, his debut album as Baths, released on Anticon in 2010. The sterile qualities of singles like “Lovely Bloodflow” have transformed into something much darker and brooding. His sophomore effort, last year’s Obsidian, musically explored the physical and emotional toll of an isolating bacterial infection, resulting in murky tracks like “Worsening” and “Earth Death.” One thing was clear — Baths had headed down a very different path, and the destination was ultimately unknown.

On “Ocean Death,” from his forthcoming EP of the same name, Wiesenfeld retains the cascading aquatics of the Cerulean single “Aminals” and welds it with the ominous aesthetic of Obsidian. The bass provides the track’s churning undercurrent, thumping at the shoreline of Wiesenfeld’s signature falsetto. While the press release claims the track “reclines in the aquatic seabed,” it sure feels as though the listener is being pulled under the surface. Listen below.
