It’s a new day in Honduras. The Brooklyn duo has no connection to the actual country, but it doesn’t matter as they’ve been playing continuously around the city for a few years now with their electric blend of punk and surf rock. And this new day means a new label. They are the first band to join the brand new Mind Altar Records, supplying the label’s debut release “Need The Sun/Water Sign.”
For the 7” release, Honduras has cranked the surf rock atmosphere all the way up, bringing out their inner Beach Boys vibes. In particular, “Need The Sun” feels like it was crafted on the Santa Monica Pier in the early 1970s while wearing a pair of bell-bottom jeans. “Water Sign” throws in a little bit of dirty CBGB to balance out its sunniness, reminding us that they haven’t forgotten their punk dive bar roots.
However, both tracks feature the cleanest vocals Honduras has ever released and their catchiest, most well-constructed melodies a la Best Coast circa 2011. While their debut album Rituals saw them playing the dirtiest, darkest venues, “Need The Sun/Water Sign” brings Honduras into the light of a skate park in the summer. They might feel brighter, but that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their bite.
Honduras play tonight March 1st at Elsewhere with BOYTOY. Tickets and details here.
