Listen: Kills Birds “Ow” is a slimy-gorgeous banger

Kills Birds may have started as a secret but these days there’s no missing the fact that they’re something else. Their new song “OW” will immediately show you why – it’s heavy and delicate, angry and somehow serene?

The guitar riff reverberates in you as it smoothly swims with Fielder Thomas’ bassline and Bosh Rothman’s drums, which also are somehow soothing – at least during the verses. “Ow” has got breezy summer drive vibes stirred in with the slime you feel at grungy basement shows at venues where the bathroom is so questionable you tell yourself you can hold it in spite of all the gross cheap beer you drank.

“I drink your gum, you chew my water ah ah ah.” The opening lyric is as gorgeously paradoxical as the song as a whole. Nina Ljeti’s voice and purposeful stuttering, along with Jacob Loeb’s distorted guitar make it all of a sudden urgent when the song comes to at its full-blown grunginess.

The full self-titled album is out Aug 28. Expect something super refreshing and exciting.
