Polica and Stargaze’s first single for their upcoming collaborative album was written the day after Trump’s election. Its title is—unfortunately—just as relevant today as it was a year ago “How Is This Happening”.

The track stretches over ten minutes long, and begins with the Bjork-esque, spare, and hauntingly beautiful vocals of Polica’s Channy Leaneag. “Resisting him, resisting us,” she sings, a phrase ready made for march poster-boards. The song then swirls into an instrumental haze of an industrial soundscape, with dreamy bits of melancholy brass mixed in, like a longing recollection of better times, somewhere far away. As the song fades away, there’s a feeling of helplessness, a need to grasp something firmer.

Immediately after Trump’s election, there was frequent talk about a comeback of punk rock, discussed as some sort of consolation prize for the situation. When we think of protest music, the archetype tends to be loud guitars and brashness. But here, Polica and Stargaze redefine that concept of a fight song into art rock, and a perfect blend of the orchestral and the electronic into their cautionary message that “our freedom isn’t really free.”

POLICA and s t a r g a z e’s album, Music For The Long Emergencywill be released on February 16th via Totally Gross National Product/Transgressive. Pre-order the album here.
