Mixtape: Something about that Sax

What is it about the saxophone?

It runs deep down in your bones, flows with good vibes straight through your veins right to your soul. It’s only the grooviest, most sensual, and straight-up joyful instrument of them all. Pink Floyd knew it, David Bowie knew it – even Lou Reed. And today, we are finally starting to figure it out again.

In a generation of young music consumers and producers that is more optimistic than ever, replacing Grudge Punk and bad attitudes with outrageously happy and colorful EDM festivals, it only makes sense to bring the saxophone back. Let’s just go ahead and say it, the sax is the sound of today. And the best part is, there is something for everyone.

If you’re more of a Billboard 100 type (we’ll forgive you), we’ve got Ariana Grande’s “Problem” blasting sax on every radio station in America … and the world for that matter.

If you’re more of an alternative, indie lover – perfect. Ellie Goulding throws some tasty sax on her killer cover of the always amazing alt-J’s “Tessellate.”

And we could never, ever leave Biggie out. So of course, there’s lots of sax to go around on Matoma’s “Hold On Be Strong vs. Big Poppa” AND his remix of “Want That Old Black Thing.”

And we best give credit where credit is due. If it weren’t for international DJs such as French duo Klingande or Dutch producer Bakermat, this whole sax thing might not even be a thing at all. But thank the jazz-gods that it is, because it’s way past time to give me that sax. Listen below.
