Photo Diary: Gigawatts Fest

If you didn’t already know, this weekend was the third annual Gigawatts Fest, a Brooklyn festival that had over 50 bands perform at bars and venues all across the borough, including locales such as the Wick, the Well, and the newly opened Our Wicked Lady. It was a weekend jam-packed with some of the best up-and-coming indie artists around, and I caught some of the action. Check out where my adventures took me across the three days of sun and awesome tunes.

The Black Lips

As always, the Black Lips were full of energy and bringing on the weird. The Black Lips aren’t afraid to make use of the stage. Someone stole Jared Swilley’s beer and Cole Alexander vigorously humped his mic stand while the crowd moshed. It’s always funny to see the photographers get mad when moshers crash into them. I understand that you’re holding an expensive piece of equipment, but you’re at a rock show, what did you expect?

Cerebral Ballzy

Brooklyn’s own Cerebral Ballzy kept it hardcore and closed out Friday night at the Wick. Of course there was more moshing and someone spilt their entire beer on my leg. Their music felt raw and you could tell the band was giving it their all. The speakers at the Wick nearly blew my ears out, but I suppose thats how I like my punk.

Anamanaguchi

Headlining Saturday was New York native band, Anamanaguchi. Their electronic pop sounds are reminiscent of anime theme songs. It’s hard not to jump around and dance when listening to their infectious beats. They closed their set by bringing out Meesh to sing their single Pop it, which if you’re not familiar with the band, you might have heard before in a Target commercial.

Ava Luna

A Brooklyn regular, Ava Luna band brought the funk to the Wick Saturday night. Though I hate confining bands to a genre, their sound has been described as nervous soul, and honestly, they are exactly that. The three lead singers Becca, Felicia, and Carlos compliment each other so well. Carlos’ voice is smooth when he needs to be, but don’t doubt his powerful lungs, his yelps pack a punch. Ava Luna play around with a lot of ideas that shouldn’t work together, and yet somehow they do.

Zula

On Sunday, I saw yet another Brooklyn band, Zula. They were the only band I was able to catch at Our Wicked Lady, which is a shame because the place looks awesome. Zula teleported me to a psych pop world where everything was sweet and cool. With a little help from the lights, I was sent to a dream state. It seemed as though the band was having as much fun as I was, smiling and feeding off each others energy.
