Video Premiere: Soda Fabric “I Don’t Wanna Save Your Life”

Soda Fabric, a Berlin-based shoegaze outfit, are set to drop their debut LP, Atlantis, this spring, and in anticipation of the big release, we have the exclusive pleasure of premiering  their fuzzy new single “I Don’t Wanna Save Your Life” and its accompanying video collage of nature vs. city imagery (directed by Shay Yacinton Ariely). Warm walls of distortion converge with howling vocals to create choruses that are enveloping swirls of energy. With dynamics that vacillate seamlessly between poppy psychedelic droning and smooth, spoken-word grooves, “I Don’t Wanna Save You” is an entrancing gem of a song, and  it comes as no surprise that Yuck’s Max Bloom was behind the sleek mixing on this track and album. Let this bad boy get stuck between your ears, then check out this quick Q&A we we were able to score with the band about Berlin, their all-star collaborations, and what bands they are currently spinning.

Watch below.

Atlantis is out later this year from Anova Music.

Why the name “Atlantis,” and how would you describe the mood of the album?

The idea of a lost island under the water has always been inspiring to us. It also effects our sound in a way. The mood of the album is versatile— sometimes straight forward, sometimes laid back, and ends with the explosion, “Atlantis.”

What is the music scene like in Berlin? Do you feel like you are part of a community? Who are some bands you would shout out?

In Berlin it’s mostly about electronic music and clubbing culture. We like to go out and dance to techno, house, etc. As a band, we try to bring the rock and roll vibe to the city.

What was it like working alongside Daniel Johnston? How did that come about and what did you learn from him?

Daniel was amazing to work with. During the only rehearsal we had with him before the show, we found that he is not so much into playing music as he is into searching comic and music stores. When we went on stage together, everything was perfect. We felt like we had been playing with him forever. He even made the crowd (and our band) shed a tear.

So Max Bloom mixed this entire album. What made him feel like the right choice for this project? Have you guys always been a fan of Yuck?

Max is a brilliant musician and a great guitar player. Yuck is an awesome band and we’ve been fans ever since they started out. We knew Max would be the right guy — he was almost like a fifth member of our band.

Who are some bands that you are listening to right now and who are some new bands that you are inspired by?

We recently went to a Twin Peaks show, they were super energetic and fun to watch. We also like the garage band Haxxan. You should check them out! Our all-time favorites include: the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Stone Roses, the Jesus and Mary Chain and more.

Do you guys play NYC?

We would certainly like to. New York clubs please contact us with an offer y’all: sodafabric@gmail.com.
