Sept 23-24th: Bushwig 2017 @ The Knockdown Center, $30-$45

The first few years I spent in New York I let Bushwig, the alternative drag festival created by Horrorchatta and Babes Trust in 2012, pass me by. I was dissuaded by the ticket price (30 dollars a day) and was disinterested in the drag I had seen.

I figured watching queen after queen lip-sync would get monotonous. When I finally went to last summer’s Bushwig, I immediately felt like a fool for ignoring the fest for so long. You don’t have to be a fan of Rupaul’s Drag Race, or even drag in general, to have a blast at Bushwig. Each performer is trying to out-do the last, often by trying to be freakier as opposed to being more fuckable.

This year there’s a raging dance floor both days if you can manage to tear yourself away from one of the TWO stages this year, and the grandeur of the performers is followed closely by the wild getups of the attendees. There are free tattoos, tacos, and a vendors market called BushSWAG for you to pick up some threads. Even the rapper Cupcakke will be performing.

Bushwig is the best event in New York because almost anything goes, and this year promises to be the biggest and best yet. Don’t miss it you squares!

Bushwig is September 23-24th at the Knockdown Center. Tickets are 30 dollars a day or 45 for the weekend and are available here
