In recent times, Brooklyn has gotten the reputation of being the “arty” center of drag. The current reigning Rupaul’s Drag Race Queen is the high brow Sasha Velour, and our borough is also home to Bushwig, an alternative drag festival that’s making waves for how it’s performers are approaching the art form of Drag. Chicago is not to be outshined though. The city has a weird energy all it’s own, with queens like Sea Coulee and Kim Chi showing national audiences that jaw-dropping looks aren’t just a NYC thing.
This weekend is Drag Con, which means drag queens from all over are flocking to NYC, and the Chicagoans are brining one of their parties with them. Queen! is a longstanding Sunday Chicago rager that’s open to all races, genders, and sexualities, something seriously refreshing in a world of white cis gay circuit parties. The vibe is very in keeping with the untamed experimental energy of the 80s and 90s club kid scene, when people went to parties to dance and gawk at nightlife oddities instead of buying overpriced VIP packages and try and hang with reality tv stars. The Brooklyn incarnation is happening at Bushwick’s House of Yes and finds the party’s stalwart queens like the bearded Lucy Stoll mixed up with LA freaks Meatball and the ever-Instagramming nightlife crew The House of Avalon. Porn stars like Boomer Banks and NYC’s own Patti Spliff will also be in attendance. DJs Garrett David, Justin Cudmore, and Turtle Bugg will be spinning house and disco all night long, and all attendees are encouraged to wear their strongest looks.
