The video for Broken Social Scene’s “Golden Facelift” is a horrific and enlightening ‘year in review.’ It opens with a YouTube clip of someone playing with a cat, which is then cut off by beautiful footage of earth and its natural habitats. But as the video progresses, more and more scenes of human violence and worldwide mayhem begin to topple the images of peace until there’s nothing left but melancholic news stories and simulated sequences of nuclear destruction. The kicker: all the horrific events being flashed at us occurred in the past year.
Seemingly, “Golden Facelift” is a statement about “how far we’ve strayed” from the natural beauty and simplicity of the world, making the viewer contemplate his own humanity alongside the terrible and wonderful things we’ve all done. It’s strangely motivational and helps all the more that the song’s pretty damn good, too.
