Listen: Y Pants “Luego Fuego” #TBT (1980)

Here’s another healthy dose of ’80s no wave. Y Pants (the only existential question you’ll ever need) was comprised of of Barbara Ess, Virginia Piersol, and Gail Vachon, who were all originally working or established in other artistic mediums before creating the band. Their use of discordant guitar riffs and out of tune toy pianos and percussion gave their music a unique, haunting vibe, falling somewhere between an anxiety attack and a mirrored fun house. In “Luego Fuego,” a track from their 1980 self-titled EP, Y Pants slowly layer bass, grinding guitar riffs, toy piano, and spoken word vocals that bloom into tribal like melodies. Unsettling yet utterly hypnotizing, you’re going to love putting this one into your musical arsenal.
