Queens/Seoul based producer and DJ, Kathy Lee aka Yaeji has gifted us with NYC inspired visuals for her underground house meets Korean folk track, “Drink I’m Sippin’ On.” Following the release of her debut EP earlier this year, the singer claims her sound is foggy house meets spoken word. Throughout the video we are fed clips of fuzzy Chinatown signage, dazed graffiti and Yaeji who raps on her bike cruising through the streets of Lower Manhattan. Her punchy yet soothing beats slowly invade your ears leaving us thirsty for another taste. Her lyrics, which she raps in Korean and english elude to feeling overwhelmed and misunderstood in the city which makes sense considering that she claims to gather most of her ideas from her daily commute. On the track she repeatedly sings, “Bringing out the colors of me, I feel so fine. Making up for what you can’t see, I feel so fine.” “Drink I’m Sippin’ On” is dreamy enough to be my personal pick to accompany a ne0-noir but i’m sure Yaeji has big plans of her own.
Catch Yaeji at Elsewhere in Brooklyn on November 9th.
