“Blessed are the faithful, for a good part of the audience took the fiasco good-naturedly, called it a pop happening, did not even ask for their money back, and went away thoughtfully.” – Ronald Tavel
Pixelated, 80’s tinged, modernism. Color-swirl cartoon-romp, and yes, it is shaded, golden greased, Alex Fippinger, hunched over his acoustic guitar with a ‘Soul Kiss’ nod, possibly to Mr. Sonic Boom. All elements familiar with the style of director, Preston Spurlock, who concocted just the right mix of psychedelic fuzz with nostalgic, American, social commentary.
Like Mary Vision’s single, the video is well crafted and delightful to all senses. The pumping lungs remind me to light-up, put on me headphones and gaze at me screen, like the televisions of ole.
“What’s that, Alex?”
Alex Fippinger: Honestly, it’s kind of a string of themes that either sort of align themselves with the song or do the exact opposite. The dichotomies of old vs young, good vs bad, nature vs city, rich vs poor. I also really wanted to introduce themes of health and human agency via drug and smoking PSA clips. Preston Spurlock did a wonderful job directing and putting this together, with the help of Stephanie Leibowitz, in the role of cinematographer. I sort of gave them a general vibe and they were able to make it a realized idea. I also really like how upper-class America is made to look ridiculous, in a certain light, at particular moments in the video.
Mary Vision’s single is out now via Taxi Gauche Records, with a full-length debut slated for release early in 2020. You can keep up with the band on Instagram and Facebook.
