9 of Sofia Coppola’s Greatest Directorial Moments

tumblr_n3qkm3aZpX1s8gmjao4_1280Happy Birthday, Sofia Coppola! The ever-so-lovely director (and also, writer, producer, model, actress, muse, Goddess, close friend of Marc Jacobs, and endlessly talented person) turns 43 today, so let’s take a look back at some of her best scenes and productions.

1. “Lick The Star”

Coppola made her directorial debut with this awesome short film back in 1998, and it quickly became obvious that her ability to communicate adolescent girlhood and all of its angst and emotions would forever be unparalleled.

2. The White Stripes: “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself”

Watching an uber-rich, ultra-famous supermodel pole-dance to a song about emotional restlessness is beyond perfect. Plus, it’s Sofia Coppola + The White Stripes + Kate Moss and what more could you possibly want?

3. “Come Sail Away” in The Virgin Suicides

This scene is so nostalgic, so beautiful, and so Sofia Coppola. Poor Lux Lisbon didn’t know what she was in for, and that’s basically the case for a million other adolescents trying to live out their desires.

4. Miss Dior Cherie

I’ve never been to Paris in the spring so I have no idea as to whether or not this ad is an even remotely realistic portrayal of what love in the city of lights might look and feel like, but I simply do not care; I am choosing to believe that this is love in Paris, and I will dream about it every day and every night.

5. “I Want Candy” in Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette has an incredible soundtrack, and while some of the other featured songs are well, better, this scene is so great. By means of exquisite pastries, custom Manolo Blahniks, and gorgeous, unaffordable jewelry, Coppola fuses her eye for beautiful things with the excess of French royalty circa 1770, with delicious results.

6. “Drop it Low” in The Bling Ring

It’s funny because you’ve been there –– come on, admit it.

7.  The Karaoke Scene in Lost in Translation

The chemistry between Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray is perfect in this scene, and it’s super easy to relate to both of their characters if you’ve ever been in a long and tired relationship with someone you truly care about even though it’s time to call the quits. It’s sad but also honest.

8.  “Cool” in Somewhere

Elle Fanning is a fairy-tale-esque princess, and the way that her adorable innocence gets her jaded father to finally understand his need to form a better relationship with her is really moving.

9. “Crazy on You” in The Virgin Suicides

I’ve written about this before, but this is totally the sexiest PG-13 rated scene of all time.
