Art Cures: Reboot For Spring

Art Cures, our new weekly series, offers a themed list of music, films, books, events and other cool stuff in hopes of supplying you with a sufficient art fix, as well as the cures you didn’t know you needed. So whether you’re reeling from a recent break-up, seeking inspiration for your creative block, or just needing a change of scenery, these lists will help raise your spirits and remedy your ills.

Doesn’t it seem as though every winter is the #WorstWinterEver? It’s like a frozen assault that goes on and on and on, until March comes along and teases us with the occasional nice day, until we’re finally gearing up to declare insanity. That said, it is especially important to keep in mind that when the winter is truly terrible, it only means the forthcoming warmth will be that much nicer. And because sometimes you need a little reminder that there is a light at the end of the frigid tunnel, here are some post-winter remedies that’ll hopefully give you the motivation you need until spring actually feels like spring.

  • Watch the video for Grimes’s unreleased track “REALiTi” because it will bring you instant sunniness and happy vibes. Watch it over and over. Dance. Be Grimes.

  • Have your aura photographed at Magic Jewelry. For $20, you hold on to this insane machine that somehow projects your aura onto a Polaroid-style photograph. Once the image is ready — they so kindly serve you green tea while you wait — the photographer explains the colors and how they depict your past, present, and future, along with the aspects of your life that may need fixing. Even if you don’t believe in these kinds of things, it’s fun to try, and the photograph is a pretty awesome keepsake. Fortunately, they aren’t always as Satanic-looking as mine.

  • Visit The Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park. Now that the weather is slightly less terrible, the time has come for us to exchange Netflix for real life and *shudders* voluntarily leave our apartments and spend time outdoors. The gardens at The Cloisters are still beautiful in the chilly weather, and trekking out to this majestic place will remind you of how great it is to experience art IRL.

  • Freshen up with a new hairdo at Tomahawk Salon. Or just browse the fantastic selection of clothing and unusual items (they also sell a ton of really good hair products) in the shop while admiring the impressive collection of skulls and taxidermy. Keep your eyes peeled for the weasel.

  • Buy yourself some greenery. Decorating your home with flowers and plants has been proven to make you happy (I think?), and there’s no better reminder that warm weather is close.

  • Listen to SubizaDelorean’s 4th (and best IMHO) studio album, and revisit the music video for “Stay Close.” Unless you don’t want to feel like you’re dancing on a tropical beach on ecstasy with the sun shining down on you from each and every angle.
