CMJ Crush: Perfect Pussy @ Santos Party House (10/14)
Overheard outside the Popgun & NME CMJ Showcase: “Wait, is there really a band called Perfect Pussy?” As I waited for Meredith Graves and her prolific punk band, Perfect Pussy to tear up Santos Party House, I realized that there was a lot of uncertainly about what the night will entail. After performing over 200 shows in 2014, her health took a wrong turn causing permanent damage to her vocal cords. Following a hiatus she recently returned to the stage, starting their set last night saying, “Tonight should be interesting, its so good to see people!” The second she started, it all became clear: we were in store for a great fucking show. As the Syracuse native slung her body all over the stage and belted songs from last years, Say Yes To Love, she demanded the packed room with her raw sound and captivating stage presence. Beyond front-running Perfect Pussy she is gaining a rep for “feminizing hardcore punk” and pioneering outlets for other female creatives. Last year she told SPIN, “I’m the luckiest person I now, everyone deserves to be this happy.”
