As a part of the Redbull Music Academy Festival, a series of awesome musical performances and happenings in NYC throughout the end of May, FKA twigs and her show Congregata overtook Brooklyn Hangar in Sunset Park with what would become an intoxicating three-night stint. Thankfully, our awesome intern Brittany caught her first performance this past Sunday, and was able to capture some killer photos of the wildly vibrant night. From old school voguers and contortionists to laser-reflecting costuming and a roaring, sweat-drenched crowd, the FKA twigs show was spectacle of art, sexuality, and intimacy — not mention a few close encounters with Robert Pattinson and Dakota Fanning.
But for all of the props, choreography, and hypnotizing effects permeating throughout the night, it was the end of twigs’ set — when she set aside time to specifically shout out her fellow performers — that really encapsulated her authenticity and voice as an artist, explaining how everyone on stage was someone she had worked closely with for a long time and who also deserved the spotlight. And we can’t forget her shout out to NYC crowds, where she recalls playing Santos Party House years ago and how she knew she could make it here because of the intense response from that particular crowd.
