In the age of quick scrolls and oversaturation, Truman Flyer released the EP and music video Shimmy Ya, amplifying music and media where “less can be more.” Truman Flyer has been making her way into the indie rock music scene this past year with the release of her first single “True Love” in August 2025, followed by “Winners on a Losing Streak,” “Smoke + Mirrors,” “Screwed Me Over,” and now her first EP, Shimmy Ya.

Watch “Shimmy Ya”

As a 21 year old, I was born into the end of the music video era. In the late 2010s, standards for videos became extremely high and music videos became less necessary for artists to receive streams. Don’t get me wrong, people didn’t stop making music videos altogether, but fewer people have watched them – myself included – making the need to create them less important. While I believe that a good song should be able to stand alone, I think music videos are a welcome addition that  add to the listening experience. As an adult, I have gotten back into watching music videos and hold a new appreciation for the art form.

Truman Flyer’s “Shimmy Ya” is a refreshing music video because it does not depend on a high budget to sound good and look great. Throughout the track,”Shimmy Ya’s” instrumentation creates a delicate, dynamic whole: a leading guitar melody, intense drums, and Flyer’s angelic vocals meld gracefully. Matching this energy, in “Shimmy Ya’s” music video the band is filmed playing a live performance. It is a creative use of a space – keeping consistency in the video while changing aspects of the room for different shots. It isn’t some crazy over-the-top video, and it doesn’t have to be. Creative makeup, outfits, and lighting add a vibrancy to the video. The music video acts as an addition to the song, but the song itself is very much front and center. The video emphasizes the integrity and quality of the song, it does not overshadow Truman Flyer’s work.
