Ali Genevich of the NYC-based band Laveda starts her solo career on a striking note with the release of “untitled freak” via Pleasure Tapes. The debut self-titled single glowers, with stripped back guitars and Genevich’s lyrics arriving at an angsty conclusion.
Recorded on a minimal setup—a small Crate amp and a Beyerdynamic Soundstar MK-2—untitled freak feels intimate, as if you were in the room with Genevich herself, “I don’t even try/It’s the 7 circles of the mind” whispering in your ear. The track is somber, and it brews introspection.
Speaking on the recording process, Genevich said that writing untitled freak “felt like the first time I let myself just do whatever the music wanted me to. I’d almost describe it as possession. The song wrote and recorded itself.” Honing in on her solo craft, more is to come from untitled freak. Genvich’s single is only the beginning.
