Listen: Caribou “Our Love”

Dan Snaith, the mastermind behind Caribou, will be releasing a new album this October titled Our Love, coming to you via his long term label Merge. Snaith long been one of the most unique and accomplished artists in the genre, and from what we’ve heard of Our Love, that isn’t going to change any time soon. We brought you the wonderful “Can’t Do Without You” a little while ago, but now we have the title track of the record, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Snaith has always been able to mix fidelity, sleek and shadowy synths, and pop-oriented, upscale beats into something unique. While “Can’t Do Without You” took a more straightforward, almost hook-oriented approach to dance, “Our Love” is a little closer to EDM. Its vocal samples are more guttural in nature, included only as a piece of the beat rather than having any real lyrical importance. There are some abrupt but ultimately welcome samples in the song that add very compelling layers to the mix, such as the unexpected violin lines at the 1:50 mark. The song also has an interesting time shift at around four minutes that pushes the beat forward but without hijacking the overall vibe of the song. Of course, a veteran like Snaith knows when there’s room for a little extra kick like that, and that’s what makes “Our Love,” and Caribou in general, so good.
