For those of you who only know Elephant 6 through Jeff Mangum, allow me to introduce you to Will Cullen Hart, the main force behind Circulatory System. He was a founding member of the Elephant 6 collective, as well as a member of experimental pop act Olivia Tremor Control, who put out some of the best retro pop of the 90s. Olivia Tremor Control’s sound was crafted largely by Hart and Bill Doss, who sadly passed away in 2012. Doss kept the band grounded in Beatles era pop while Hart pushed them into the ethereal, including a brash and experimental collage on their debut album titled “Green Typewriters” that lasted 23 minutes.
Needless to say, Hart’s work in Circulatory System, without the metaphorical anchor of Doss’ pop sensibilities, largely veers on the psychedelic side. It has a very transcendental leaning, and the band’s newest song, “Stars And Molecules” is no different. Like most of Circulatory System’s catalogue, it plays with the avenues that sound can create with a cavernous sound style. It’s lo-fi, but in a way that makes the recording drift from it’s moorings, making it sound far away instead of simply low quality. It fits into the bands canon quite well. Check it out below.
Circulatory System’s new album is titled Mosaics Within Mosaics, and will be released by Hart’s own label, Cloud Recordings on June 24th.
