Listen: Future Islands “One Day”

Baltimore’s Future Islands have quietly put together an impressive career of emotionally charged electronic music. They finally seem to be getting some more recognition, as they’ve moved to 4AD for their new album, Singles. We know the album will feature the track “Seasons (Waiting on You),” which we brought to your attention a few weeks ago. That song’s single features “One Day” as its B-side, and while it hasn’t made the album, it still showcases some of Future Island’s stronger traits.

The song seems to be in the vein of “Seasons (Waiting on You),” highlighting a more reserved side of lead singer Sam Herring’s vocal range. He still has an incredibly emotive voice, but he isn’t as exuberant as he has shown on previous songs. The subject matter of “One Day” also fits what they do best. It’s about the end of something, most likely a relationship. While he spends the start of the song in a somewhat pathetic state, the chorus gives us hope that he can move on and become a stronger person (“But we’ll be stronger when we meet again someday”). If songs like this are being left off the album then we can only hope that speaks well for its quality. Listen below.

Singles is out March 25th on 4AD
