Listen: Man Man – “End Boss”

Man Man 1

Philadelphia’s curiously volatile Man Man continue to rein in their subversive quirk in favor of inviting and stripped-down pop with their exclusive Facebook release this week of “End Boss,” the second single from their upcoming album, On Oni Pond. Following in the footsteps of the previous single, “Head On,” this track is much more even-keeled than previous efforts, proceeding with vibe-building restraint instead of barreling through a wide range of dynamics. It lets saxophone, marimba, and syncopated drums establish a simple but steady jam for frontman Honus Honus’s charming and slightly gravelly vocals to cut through and tell us another tale about a wolf in the night. While I don’t find it as irresistible as the feel-good “Head On,” “End Boss” shines as yet another display of Man Man’s musical versatility and evolving sound. Listen to it here until we get the whole package from ANTI- on September 10.
