Kristina Esfandiari used to be in Whirr. Now she’s doing her own thing under the (somehow not already taken) moniker Miserable. Her debut EP, Halloween Dream, is out in February on The Native Sound. “Spinning” is taken from that EP, and it certainly fits the theme and style set up by both Esfandiari’s band name and the title of her EP.
Esfandiari’s voice is the main component for the early part of the song. It is carried by sparse guitar, which then shifts into a march-like drum beat and further accompaniment. It builds to an climatic moment near two minutes in, where the guitars pick up and crashing cymbals are thrown into the mix with abandon. Even with all this going on, it still has an overall dour feeling that is hard to shake. Esfandiari’s voice is mournful, and even when she has to raise it at times, she never shows much emotion. Considering how busy the song gets, it’s actually quite impressive. Listen below.
