Sharon Van Etten will be releasing her third album this May. Are We There is the sequel to her excellent sophomore album Tramp, which came out in 2012. Are We There will see release on Jagjaguwar, her second major release for the label. The album is 11 songs long, and you can view the tracklist below. “Taking Chances” was released this week as a promotion for the album, and it gives us a glimpse into how the album might sound.
Van Etten’s style truly flourished on Tramp, when before it had been very sparse and guitar driven. “Taking Chances” shows even more evolution. It feels simplified in a way, with a drum machine beat and very minimal guitar that competes with keyboard throughout the song. It flourishes during the chorus, but the song overall has a Beach House vibe to it. Van Etten stands out as a very strong lyricist in her previous work, and again she shines here, especially near the end of the song. It will be interesting to see how much of her new album takes on this sound, because it actually fits her quite well. Listen below.
