Mon. 1/6
- Nothing truly notable 🙁
Tues. 1/7
- Union Pool: Hiding Places, bloodsports
- Union Pool’s run of free shows starts this Tuesday. Commencing this notable event are Hiding Places and bloodsports. Before the show, check out bloodsports new album Anything Can Be a Hammer.
- Nightclub 101: Croaker, The Overhead Bins, Star’s Revenge
- Croaker, who played AC15, is headlining Nightclub 101 in a show presented by 1-800 girlfriend. This show is for fans of The Cure of Bar Italia; Croaker is no stranger to jangly guitar leads and goth, brooding basslines.
Weds. 1/8
- RSVP for address: Ideas for conversations, tal castle, cicada
- Shimmery synths and analog dance music, get ready to move. This line up is a force to be reckoned with. My sister and I are obsessed with tal castle’s track no fair; it’s hopeful, sweet, and everything you need.
Thurs. 1/9
- Le Poisson Rogue: Mei Semones & John Roseboro, Amy Gadiaga, Sam Gendel, Joe Westerlund, William Tyler & Yasmin Williams + Sylvan Esso (DJ set)
- Winter Jazzfest is partnering with Psychic Hotline, a label founded by Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn alongside Martin Anderson, for a showcase that “expands the conversation around jazz and its many intersections.” Jazz, folk, and experimental music are all on the table Thursday night.
- Union Pool: Ryley Walker, Nick Malkin, Pregnancy
- There is something tangible and raw about an acoustic guitar. Ryley Walker knows how to wield it. The Chicago based fingerstyle guitarist is bringing his talents to Union Pool, a true master by the likes of The Roundabout.
Fri. 1/10
- Bowery Ballroom: Cab Ellis, Native Sun, Torture and the Desert Spiders
- Cab Ellis’s sound reminds me of a slightly more hi-fi Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. This Friday, the band is bringing their renowned “fierce, sweaty, unpredictable explosion” of a live show to Bowery Ballroom. If that’s up your alley, listen to the band’s new self-titled LP before the show.
- Elsewhere: Suzy Sheer, Silicone Valley, Patch+
- For those who mess with sample based hyperpop, tonight is your night. Suzy Sheer, the duo composed of Boysinblush and Tuchscreen, weaponize the bass to produce a sound both pure and angelic.
Sat. 1/11
- Terminal 5: Snow Strippers, Evilgiane b2b Eera, Anna Luna, Ksuuvi
- Snow strippers never stop touring. Lucky for us, it’s a dream!!!
- Nightclub 101: Epoxy, My Transparent Eye, Cleo Walks Through Glass, addie (computerwife) DJ
- Emo and shoegaze? That’s all I need. Before the show, listen to Epoxy’s latest album CIVILIANS!
- Guggenheim Museum: Sun Ra Arkestra
- In the rotunda after dark, see Sun Ra Arkestra play. I’ve never been the Guggenheim past its usual hours and can only imagine the beauty in the shadow play of the building’s structure at night. Now, add live music into the mix. This event stays true to the orphist philosophy, if anyone else remembers the Guggenheim’s exhibit on orphism a few years ago.
Sun. 1/12
- Nightclub 101: gobbinjr, Jeanines, Betty Brite
- Gobbinjr’s latest single just a dream stays true to the project’s indie pop roots. Emma Whitmer’s synths force a unanimous optimism onto me.
