Mon. 2/16:
- TV EYE: CS Cleaners, Eraser, Chronophage
- CS Cleaner’s new single Come & Go is a hypnotic breed of post-punk. The guitars dance, the bass chugs, it’s all you could ever want.
Tues. 2/17:
- Elsewhere: Babehoven, KatzPascale, Truman Flyer, Talulah Paisley
- ANTICS is putting on a fundraiser to raise proceeds for the Immigrant Defense Project and their magazine. From Babehoven’s sentimental indie to KatzPascale’s inventive instrumentals, this bill will not disappoint.
- Nightclub 101: Why Bonnie, Esther Fallick, thanks for coming
- Why Bonnie returns to Nightclub 101 for the second show of their February residency. This time around thanks for coming, the solo project of Water For Your Eye’s Rachel Brown, is opening. Before the show, listen to Yr Kind of Cool; it hits.
- Pianos: Debris Bardot, Reading, GRTV, Sticky and the Wet
- Debris Bardot’s latest EP Is For Good Men To Do Nothing doesn’t take itself too seriously and is very legitimate music. Top Ten Rock Chords to Spark Creativity is a genius joke. I wish I came up with it.
- Purgatory: Bloody Knuckles, Find My Friends, People I Love
- Bloody Knuckles presents two free shows at Purgatory; one on 2/17, the other on 2/24. You may be familiar with the label for representing Feeble Little Horse and Aunt Katrina. Like other Bloody Knuckles–affiliated artists, this bill’s lineup also experiments with guitar and electronics. Find My Friends debut self titled album is a must listen.
- TV EYE: BODEGA, Open Head, DJ Ozzi
- BODEGA have songs titled Music Hall of Williamsburg and Webster Hall, but not TV EYE, what’s that all about? If you hold an affinity for post-punk, this show is for you.
Weds. 2/18:
- Purgatory: Paris Archives, Patching, Untitled Freak, and Speedfriending
- Ali Genevich of Laveda will play one of her first shows for her new solo project, untitled freak, ahead of the release of 7 circles on March 13th. Across the project’s series of singles, guitar riffs play off each other in angsty reverie shadowed beneath whispered lyrics. It’s haunting.
Thurs. 2/19:
- Elsewhere: MGNA Crrrta, Ali RQ, Christ Dillinger
- MGNA Crrrta’s album Beautiful Disaster drops February 20th. Rein in the release at Elsewhere. Be prepared to dance.
- Mudhouse: Dolly, Laveda, Or Best Offer, Victoryland (solo)
- It’s indie rock o’clock. Both Dolly and Victoryland’s music channels a 2010 Williamsburg vibe; I envision their work as a pseudo-soundtrack to Girls.
- Purgatory: Blandest, Wince, Velvet, and Lying Season
- I hadn’t heard of Blandest until I found this show and I wish I listened to them sooner. The band’s track Trinket is the perfect symbiosis of shoegaze and noise rock.
- TV EYE: Voyeur, Weeping Icon, Mems of Live Skull, Bisi Collective
- Celebrate 45 years of BC Studio with a stacked line up. From Sonic Youth to Swans, BC Studio took part in recording many of my favorite albums. Here is to another 45 years!
- Union Pool: Smush, Daundry, Crate
- Load up your bags and head to shoegaze station. Smush and Crate hit the Bushwick chord like no other.
Fri. 2/20:
- Nightclub 101: Sword II, Dagmar Zuniga, HERE
- Sword II’s recent LP Electric Hour is lush with an edge; it’s chamberpop with a gothic soul. You don’t know where the next song will take you, yet the album is cohesive. Listen to Disconnection before the show.
- Union Pool: Remember Sports, Carlos Truly, Editirx
- Remember Sports is playing Union Pool for the release of their new album The Refrigerator. The LP is more of the same fun, upbeat indie, resembling the sound of the iconic Get Bummed Out.
Sat. 2/21:
- Baby’s All Right: Sword II, fantasy of a broken heart, Total Wife
- Sword II is playing a second night in NYC at Baby’s All Right. Don’t miss openers Total Wife, the band is making some of my favorite shoegaze right now. Tracks like second spring remind me of the Swirlies.
- Transpecos: Tommy Fleece Live in New York w/ Gabby Start and Reserv
- Tommy Fleece’s new album VS the machine is banger after banger. Bump and grind nonironically gets me pumped. Cyberemo rocks.
- Le Poisson Rogue: Florist, Hello Shark
- If you’re craving the soft serenade of an acoustic guitar, Florist is playing their new album Jellywish at LPR. Fingerpicking never sounded so good.
Sun. 2/22:
- WFMU Radio Presents Live from Monty Hall: Sara Devoe
- Long live college radio: WFMU DJ Perro Caliente presents Sara Devoe live from Monty Hall for an in-person performance and broadcast. Devoe’s dreampop is hazy and intimate, and if you can’t make it, make sure to tune into WFMU.
