Mon. 3/30:
- TV EYE: David J, Paul Wallfisch, Joseph Keckler, Alison Clancy
- David J, most commonly known as the bassist for Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, is prolific. David’s solo career bears little resemblance to his early gothic work; songs like Punishment By Roses have no trace of the 80s. This show is for the realest music nerds.
- Warsaw: Drain, No Pressure, Haywire, Secret World
- Hailing from Santa Cruz, hardcore punk band Drain’s got grit. Their new album …IS YOUR FRIEND bleeds with uninhibited energy.
Tues. 3/31:
- Public Records: Charlotte Cornfield + Beck Zegans
- Toronto songwriter Charlotte Cornfield’s album Hurts like Hell brings singer songwriter music into an openhearted and confident confession. With narrative lyrics and an occasional pedal steel, fans of Waxahatchee will enjoy what Cornfield brings to the table.
Weds. 4/1:
- Baby’s All Right: Hudson Freeman, Helenor
- Folk artist Hudson Freeman’s music makes me want to sit by the trees and stare into the sun. Artists like MJ Lenderman may have brought greater attention to the indie country scene, but it’s artists like Hudson Freeman that are its backbone.
- Transpecos: figure eight, Many Shining Windows, Ditch, Paris Archives
- figure eight’s set of singles until the sun swallows the earth/hummingbird dives into the depths of the reverbed sea. The band itches my incessant craving for melodic distortion.
Thurs. 4/2:
- Bowery Ballroom: Luna
- Luna, the 1990s indie rock band of former Galaxie 500 member Dean Wareham, is playing three nights at Bowery Ballroom. As a devoted Galaxie 500 fan, I love Luna. The group’s music is a more graceful, matured version of Wareham’s early work.
- Elsewhere: fanclubwallet, Peaer
- Bedroom pop didn’t die in 2016, artists like fanclubwallet are keeping it alive. Hannah Judge’s music is sweet and catchy, and songs like Cotton Mouth have an innocent high school feel.
- New York Society for Ethical Culture, Adler Hall: Perfume Genius, Dan English
- Inside a theater coated in mahogany wood, Perfume Genius will play an intimate performance alongside Dan English. This show is sold out, but it’s worth adding yourself to the waitlist.
- Public Records: A. Deeplove [Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT] + Bryce Hackford
- A. Deeplove’s, the DJ pseudonym for Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, mixes are funky. With traces of the 70s and call backs to early 80s house, Deeplove will get you moving.
Fri. 4/3:
- 94 Bogart St: Elegy for Lenore, Within Dying Light, Benevolence, Until The Day Breathes, cleo walks through glass
- Chainmail collective returns with their hallmark art show and set of live performances. I saw some of the best art I’ve seen in a while at the last one of these, so show out to support your local arts and community!
- Elsewhere: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, UMA DJ
- The majority of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s avant modular synthesis work has orchestral textures. However, the composer’s new album GUSH brings her electronic music into a new direction. It has a driving beat, brought on by a variety of drum machines.
- Transpecos: ideas for conversations, harry teardrop, blue, exfilstar, Saja, B7lanket, Espurr
- Every artist on this bill will get you to dance. ideasforconversations is on the up too, they were just featured by the Fader as an indie act to watch and opened for The Hellp last week.
- Warsaw: Nothing, Full Body 2, Cryogeyser, Violent Magic Orchestra
- The shoegaze heads live and die for Nothing. I saw it for myself at Slide Away Fest last year. The band’s new album, a short history of decay, maintains Nothing’s sound: an LP both distorted and droning.
- Pioneer Works: Dirty Three
- I’m familiar with the Dirty’s Three pictorial instrumental music because of their collaboration with Cat Power on Moon Pix. That’s probably why the band’s work featuring Chan, like Great Waves, are my favorite.
Sat. 4/4:
- Elsewhere: Neon Indian (DJ Set), Neggy Gemmy (DJ Set)
- If Neggy Gemmy’s DJ set sounds anything like her album, She Comes From Nowhere, I’m there. I probably listened to Mysterious Girl every day last summer.
- Union Pool: Hiding Places, Andy Loabs, Like A Doll
- Hiding Places debut album The Secret to Good Living is out April 3rd. The band holds roots in the Asheville scene, and because of that, gives off a Wednesday vibe. Make sure to listen to their recent set of singles before the show.
- Market Hotel: Surfbort, Gnarcissists, Bad Vacation, PunchLove
- Surfbort’s show at Nightclub 101 April 3rd is sold out, but Market Hotel tickets are still available. The punky rock band’s new album Reality Star is chaotic and fun. Each song on the album is an upbeat headbanger.
- Los Depressos Green House: Hudson Freeman & The Bedroomer, MOIO
- Indiehourzz presents Hudson Freeman & The Bedroomer in the Los Depressos recording studio’s Green House. This show is free, showcases great artists, and is in a unique venue: why miss out on this?
Sun. 4/5:
- Nightclub 101: Native Sun, Beau, The Dutch Kills
- 1-800-Girlfriend and Alt Citizen present “Sunday Service,” a new residency at Nightclub 101. This show’s theme is “COOL KIDS,” an homage to Marisa Whitaker’s very own Alt Citizen column. Check out Marisa’s interviews with both Native Sun and The Dutch Kills before the show.
- TV EYE: Computer Kill, Prom, Makeout City
- Computer Kill’s new single what do you want from me is a brooding dark wave soundscape. Sunday nights are all about getting gothic.
