Mon. 5/18
- Nightclub 101: Caution, Theadoore, Recuse
- rocknite returns with Caution headlining. Before the show, make sure to check out the band’s new album Peripheral Vision; it’s a ripping LP full of shattering rhythm and heavy riffage.
Tues. 5/19
- 66 Greene St: Cardinals
- Cork alt rock band Cardinals stay in NYC continues…The band’s new album Masquerade is an ode to Ireland and the pain of heartbreak. Melding rock and traditional Irish folk music, Cardinals’ sound is unique, and one to watch.
- Nightclub 101: Starling, Total Wife, Crate
- Shoegaze band Starling’s new single Anti-sonata darts and chugs between a multitude of distorted guitar parts. No doubt about it, Starling’s got the light/heavy transition down. If you like Cashier, you’ll love what Starling is releasing.
- Union Pool: Frankie Cosmos, Gabby’s World
- Frankie Cosmos is celebrating 10 years of Next Thing with shows at Union Pool and Bowery Ballroom. This album pretty much sums up indie music in 2016. Listening to Fool always brings on nostalgia.
- Elsewhere: Friendship, Lomelda, Lily Talmers
- Indie rock band Friendship’s music is meant for the outdoors; for open skies, peaks and valleys. That doesn’t mean the band’s music will not translate at Elsewhere. Instead, it will be a respite from city mentality.
Weds. 5/20
- Stone Circle Theatre: Discovery Zone, Time Wharp
- Discovery Zone’s album Remote Control, released in 2020, is ethereal and warped in all the right ways. The artist’s latest LP Library Copy Do Not Remove in collaboration with World Brain gets more ambient and experimental, drawing you into an expansive soundscape of synths.
Thurs. 5/21
- Bowery Ballroom: Nia Archives
- Nia Archives is stepping “OUT OF HER SHELL.” Announcing her first ever live performances in London and NYC, the English artist is warming herself up for a festival heavy summer. And we, us lucky New Yorkers, are some of the first to see Nia Archives debut live.
- Elsewhere: ARCHANGEL, dazegxd, gum.mp3, JIALING, Jubilee, Kush Jones, Moma Ready, Swami Sound
- Post debut show, Nia Archives is hosting “Up Ya Archives” at Elsewhere. Get ready to dance to a set of elite DJs.
- Knockdown Center: caroline, claire rousay, giant claw
- Eight piece English band caroline’s explorative and layered instrumentation is unmistakable. The band’s second album features vocals by Caroline Polacheck on “Tell me I never knew that,” bringing their multilayered craft more accessibility to the average listener. But, the entirety of caroline 2 is a masterpiece, be sure to listen to the whole thing.
- Le Poisson Rogue: Cash Only Tony’s, Liturgy, Holidays in United States, xbongx, Seven Crimson Suns
- Get emo with it. Cash Only shreds like no other. This bill is bound to turn into one giant mosh.
- Music Hall of Williamsburg: Grace Ives, Rockie Rode
- Grace Ives new LP “Girlfriend” and Rockie Rode’s “Rockie” are both must listens. The two bring a whimsy to alt pop and are exploring my new favorite niche.
Fri. 5/22
- 148 Frost St: Cab Ellis, Boxxer
- Twenty Somethings presents Cab Ellis in the Boxing Ring with support from Boxxer. With a penchant for uninhibited, chaotic live shows, the ring is an apt environment for Cab Ellis to get wild.
- Baby’s All Right: Trinity Ace, Oldstar, Superfan, Double Helix Peace Treaty, Christopher Emond
- Perfectly Imperfect presents a late show for the books. If the line up wasn’t enough to be too good to be true, the gig is also Trinity Ace’s EP release show. Listen to the band’s debut Learning to Be a Cowboy on the Horse That Broke My Arm now.
- Music Hall of Williamsburg: Teen Suicide, Cloud Nothings, University, Coolant
- Teen Suicide’s new album Nude descending staircase headless is no i will be my own hell because there is a devil inside my body. It’s not lofi or DIY in any way shape or form. However, Kitty and Sam Ray explained the larger sound was adopted in their exploration of grief. To the duo, trauma sounds explosive.
- Public Records: Moin, Dejing
- All the coolest kids listened to You Never End and all the coolest kids will be at Public Records Friday night. Cubby never gets old.
- Nightclub 101: Mint Field
- Mexico City based band Mint Field’s music lures you into an avant reverbed atmosphere; one that cannot be penetrated and is completely transfixing. Be sure to listen to El mar me veía before the show.
- Rooftop at Pier 17: Belle & Sebastian
- I don’t think Belle & Sebastian need much of an introduction. You should know who they are. If you can’t make the show on Friday, they are also playing Saturday at Pier 17.
Sat. 5/23
- Union Pool: Threshold, Poor Image, The Furniture Group
- Threshold is one of the many projects of Isaac Eiger, a member of both voyeur and Strange Ranger. This band, unlike his others, has a more relaxed and ethereal sound. That being said, Perfectly Imperfect is putting on another impeccable bill, and you don’t want to miss this one.
- Nightclub 101: Hyd
- Hyd is an alt pop princess. Her latest series of singles give Oklou, arriving just in time for summer. Watch You Cry is meant for a beach day.
- Transpecos: goldenstar, Council on Foreign Relations, Mikey Enwright, Ura
- goldenstar’s new EP Chamber Music is lofi indie rock realness. Distorted leads and slow tempoed guitars weave together a feeling of a bittersweet summer; a collage of humid evenings and leafy trees. It’s heavily inspired by Alex G’s Trick.
Sun. 5/24
- Nothing notable as of right now 🙁
