Live Show Round Up 5/25 – 5/31

Mon. 5/25:

  • Elsewhere: sunflwr, veggi

    • It might be raining and fifty degrees, but Elsewhere’s rooftop is still open for business. Nothing will stop sunflwr and veggi from playing their house beats all day long.

Tues. 5/26:

  • Baby’s All Right: full body 2, joyer, bloodsports

    • Everybody knows a Marshall stack is elite. Marshall continues to bring it, and this Tuesday Marshall presents a free show at Baby’s. full body 2, joyer, and bloodsports’s music is a testament to the versatility of guitar music and alt rock’s direction.

  • Bowery Ballroom: Just Mustard

    • I had a Just Mustard phase in college, and Seed’s gothic, shoegazy sound will never get old. To my excitement, their new album WE WERE JUST HERE is just as distorted and dark as Heart Under. Make sure to listen to ENDLESS DEATHLESS before the show.

  • Rough Trade Below: Grace Ives

    • Grace Ives is headed to Rough Trade Below for a live performance and signing in support of her new album Girlfriend. In a period where pop music is engineered for the TikTok algorithm, Ives indie pop is both raw and heartachingly real.

Weds. 5/27:

  • Nightclub 101: School Fair

    • School Fair did it again. The New Zealand band’s new album Unexpected Violence is my favorite type of austere rock music: brooding, glowering, and full of spoken word. Doors don’t open until ten, but this is a show you’ll want to stay up for.

  • Amant: Body/Head, Aaron Dilloway, MV CARBON, and Noise Nomads

    • Kim Gordon and Bill Nace’s noise group duo Body/Head are playing a set alongside artists MV CARBON, Aaron Dilloway, and Noise Nomads in conjunction with Kim Gordon’s exhibition Count Your Chickens on display at Amant until the end of August. It doesn’t get any more no wave than this.

  • Front + John St: Rye, Frail

    • You heard that right, on Wednesday, May 27th at 5pm, the Numero Group pop up is putting on a free show: it will be Rye Coalition’s first gig in years and Philly screamo pioneers Frail are opening. I’ve already been to the pop up and left hands full. This show (and pop up) is worth the trek to the Seaport.

  • Ace Hotel Brooklyn: ideasforconversations, smush

    • The Ace Hotel is releasing their “Brooklyn Brooklyn Guide,” and to celebrate the occasion, Perfectly Imperfect is throwing a party with performances by ideasforconversations, smush and dj sets all night from jauwshewuh and Gavin Oswal.

  • 90 Wythe Ave: Blush, Le Keep, Gabriela

    • This month, 1-800 Girlfriend and J’aime are hosting Cherry Pop. As part of the event, Blush is holding his release show for Jackal. This bill will keep you dancing all night long.

Thurs. 5/28:

  • Webster Hall: Smerz

    • Following the infamous Big city life, Norwegian duo Smerz released their Easy EP about a week ago. It’s just as chic, sexy, and smudgy.

  • Elsewhere: Hudson Freeman, lots of hands

    • Folk artist Hudson Freeman’s music is meant to be played on Elsewhere’s rooftop; in proximity to the vast open sky, sun setting on Manhattan in the  distance. Listen to Freeman’s newest EP, Adult Contemporary, in collaboration with The Bedroomer before the show.

  • Elsewhere: My New Band Believe, Wendy Eisenberg

    • You best believe it. Black Midi bassist Cameron Picton’s solo debut album My New Band Believe blends baroque and chamber punk arrangements into a dizzying and epic journey. Understandably, it resembles the sound of Mr. Greep and black midi.

  • Pete’s Candy Store: Seventh Swan, Computer, Green Sahara, Fear of Flying

    • Get ready to get emo. It’s Seventh Swan’s first show, and I promise you, it will be an evening to remember. Midwest, mathy, and loud, this gig will blow out the PAs at Petes.

Fri. 5/29:

  • TV EYE: Robber Robber, empath, Maiya Blaney

    • Burlington, Vermont band Robber Robber’s album Two Wheels Move the Soul is pressurized indie rock, built with jagged guitars and off-kilter electronics. However, the band manages to bring dissonant sounds into something beautifully whole. If you’re a fan of feeble little horse or Deerhoof, you’ll rock with Robber Robber.

  • Public Records: Wolf Eyes, Cholla

    • Forming in the early 2000s, Wolf Eyes is a fiercely D.I.Y. experimental noise unit. The band has over 297 recordings, and only knows one principle: be avant as possible.

Sat. 5/30:

Sun. 5/31:

  • Nightclub 101: tall friend, Pleasure Systems, 100 Watt Horse, Mx. Autumn

    • tall friend’s new album fossil is dreamy, lofi indie rock. In each track, River Pfaff’s breathy lyrics are carried by mellow, clean guitars. Something about the album, and I can’t quite pin it down, feels reminiscent of 2016 bedroom pop.
