Live Show Round Up 8/3 – 8/9

Mon. 8/3:

  • Nightclub 101: calamity, DRYCLEANONLY
    • I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about calamity’s latest album cows&horses. The French artist’s alternative R&B and hip-hop reminds me of FKA twigs with its hypnagogic pop rhythms, stitched together samples, and ethereal instrumentation. Please listen to “served.” You will be eternally grateful.

Tues. 8/4:

  • Cassette: Natalia Catalan, Also Now, Club Ecology, Company-Y
    • Natalia Catalan’s album Die Without Makeup is jazz-infused electropop for the reels’ addicted mind. Each song on the LP is under two minutes and thirty seconds; they grab your attention, pack every second with layered digital and analog melodies, and then dissipate. In Die Without Makeup, Catalan refuses the notion of space.
  • The Hancock: Celeste
    • British-American R&B singer Celeste’s vocals are languid and sultry. The Hancock’s intimate grandeur is the apt environment for Celeste and a velvety, personal performance. Listen to “Easy” before the show.

Weds. 8/5:

Thurs. 8/6:

  • Brooklyn Bowl: Digable Planets
    • In college, my close friend and I were obsessed with the Digable Planets song “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” The 90’s hip hop group only released two albums, one in ‘93 the other in ‘94, but their legacy is irrefutable. Get ready to get down with some fifty year olds.
  • Main Drag Music: Sex Week, Ivy Knight, Amiture Music, Cicada
    • Sex Week recovered their hard drive and will be playing unreleased songs at Main Drag Thursday night. Come for Ivy Knight, Amiture Music, and Cicada, and stay for something new.
  • The Sultan Room Rooftop: Retail Drugs, bounty, Nara’s Room
    • Retail Drugs is always playing a show. But, this time around bounty and Nara’s Room are joining the bill. Before the show make sure to listen to bounty’s new EP Off Track ; it’s lo-fi indie rock, with a warm, summery feel.
  • Sleepwalk: Whisper Doll, Loveletter, Mo Yung
    • Whisper Doll’s second album, Lucky Clover, drops October 2nd. If dream poppy singles “Bluebells” and “Am I A Knife,” weren’t enough to satisfy you, show up to Sleepwalk to hear more unreleased tracks off the upcoming LP.
  • Bowery Palace: HR of Bad Brains & The Human Rights Movement
    • HR, the frontman of DC hardcore band Bad Brains, is playing the Bowery Palace with The Human Rights Movement. As one of hardcore’s most pivotal figures, seeing this show is a reminder to practice P.M.A; HR’s philosophy adopted from Napoleon Hill to practice optimism, inner strength, and self-belief.

Fri. 8/7:

  • 303 Ten Eyck St: Autobahn, Reading, Gusty
    • I love supporting indie publishing houses and I love this lineup. Petal Books is bringing some of NYC’s best up and coming bands to play, and I can’t think of one reason not to go to this show. Not kidding, Autobahn’s “7 Window Still” was in my Spotify Wrapped.
  • ErF: ideasforconversations, The Dallas Cowboys, Hemwick Witch
    • Every ErF gallery show I go to is beautifully done. Art, music, friends, cheap beer, it doesn’t get any better. An electronic pulse, brought by ideasforconversations, The Dallas Cowboys, and Hemwick Witch, will be the soundtrack to this showcase.
  • DM for location: Gods Wisdom, Peachole, tongue relaxer, celebrity suicide, boy best friends, jack propane, former actress
    • If you love your computer, Ableton, or the overall aesthetic of the dallas cowboys, head to this free show on Friday. All the Bushwick/Ridgewood tweemos will be there.
  • Knockdown Center: Charlotte de Witte, Lindsey Herbert, Mos
    • Belgian electronic superstar Charlotte de Witte is bringing her minimal, acid techno to Knockdown. This gig and Witte’s b2b with Yousuke Yukimatsu at Under the K Bridge on Saturday are both sold out, but it doesn’t hurt to hop on the waitlist. Commit to the beat.
  • Purgatory: Fraternal Twin, Ditch, Bedridden, and Recuse
    • Fraternal Twin’s new album Halo Fell Forever is out September 4th. Frontman Tom Christie expressed the album is a practice of patience, and the band’s single “Solitude” is an exercise in winding, unhurried guitar parts to convey a sense of isolation. But, you don’t have to be alone like Christie was when he wrote this song. Be a part of the crowd Friday night.

Sat. 8/8:

  • Rippers: Ovlov, Laveda, Big Kiss
    • 18 years of Ovlov! Celebrate the band’s anniversary with a free show at the best place possible: the beach. If you haven’t experienced the beauty of a frozen drink at Rippers, Saturday is your chance.
  • TV EYE: Slow Fiction
    • Tight Knit and ANTICS present indie rock band Slow Fiction’s release show for their debut album, dollhouse, out August 7th. Come for the music, and stay for a comedy set and a market of local vendors.

Sun. 8/9:
