Live Show Round Up 8/31 – 9/6

Mon. 8/31

  • Baby’s All Right: Venetian Blinds, bounty, Agnes
    • Venetian Blinds, formerly known as PANIK FLOWER, may have changed their name, but the band’s vocally driven shoegaze sound has remained the same. That classic Bushwick shoegaze vibe… it’s not going anywhere.

Tues. 9/1

  • Elsewhere: Hyd, Natalia Catalan, Astoria
    • Hyd, the solo electropop project of multi-disciplinary artist Hayden Dunham, recently released Hold Onto Me Infinity, an album documenting the loss of her brother and her partner SOPHIE. Built with shimmering synthesizers and pulsing drum machines, you wouldn’t assume Hold Onto Me Infinity is an album about death. But, at its core, it’s devastating. Hyd’s grief is the infrastructure for every note, every line.

Weds. 9/2

  • The Brooklyn Monarch: Quicksand, Bane, Soul Blind
    • 90s post hardcore band Quicksand’s iconic album Slip is over thirty years old, but that doesn’t mean the band has stopped releasing new music. Quicksand’s fifth studio album Bring On The Physics keeps a post-hardcore ethos, and invites a riotous, frenetic energy.

Thurs. 9/3

  • ALPHAVILLE: Amiture Music, Michael Eliran, Or Best Offer
    •  Do you mess with Slint? Unwound? Something slightly sinister? Amiture Music is bred on the austere; the haunt of a disjunct and dissonant guitar. Make sure to give the band’s self-titled debut a listen before the show.
  • Knockdown Center: Underworld
    • My high school crush showed me “Jumbo” sophomore year of high school and my world imploded. Underworld is heavily influential, with their signature atmospheric dance and techno defining electronic music in the 90s and shaping electronic as we know it today: I’m sure all of you know “Born Slippy (Nuxx).” The duo is playing two sets with no support at Knockdown on Thursday and Friday, and if you’re there, you might just transcend.
  • Elsewhere: Sylvan Esso (DJ set), Tama Gucci, Swaya
    • Don’t get your hopes up, Sylvan Esso is only DJing Elsewhere Thursday night. The indie duo is playing shows on the rest of their fall tour, but New York gets what the cool kids want: a DJ set.
  • Madison Square Garden: Lily Allen
    • Lily Allen’s West End Girl tour is making its way to MSG. With the dissolution of her marriage to David Harbour, advertising chronic vaping, and the release of her album, Allen has remained a facet of the public eye. But, little of this attention is focused on the quality of “West End Girl.” You’ll have to see for yourself if the media frenzy manifests into a great show.

Fri. 9/4

  • TV EYE: Victoryland, Threshold, Houndsteeth
    • We all know and love Victoryland. Now, the rest of the East Coast will love Victoryland too. Julian McCamman’s indie rock project is heading out on a fall tour opening for LCD Soundsystem, but, before they leave, they’re playing one last show in NYC.
  • Elsewhere: roseville sucks, Chistopher Emond, Heaven Slight
    • I normally don’t love music from artists that also have YouTube channels. But, Anthony Cronk’s bedroom indie project, roseville sucks, is an exception. Part of the YouTube show “Hivemind,” Cronk’s series of singles capture a naive, forlorn feel. Also on the bill is Christopher Emond and Heaven Slight, who you don’t want to miss.
  • Barclays Center: Robyn
    • I <3 Robyn. Ever since Body Talk came out when I was seven, I’ve been riding the Robyn wave. Robyn’s new album, Sexistential, is a return to Body Talk’s definitive sound and it’s everything: sexy, sentimental, and completely Robyn.
  • Footlight Presents at the Windjammer: warmachine, Porcelain, Misuser
    • If there is any up and coming shoegaze band to watch, it’s warmachine. The band signed to Julia’s War Recordings, played Slide Away Fest, and now is making their way to The Windjammer. Blending heavy, hardcore gaze with melodic interludes, warmachine’s new album HELLPHONE 3D is for fans of Her New Knife, Cashier, and TAGABOW.

Sat. 9/5

  • Baby’s All Right: ee, Push Ups, Tal Castle
    • ee’s album Ramadan is a cult classic. Formed in 1999 by former Korea Girl guitarist/vocalist Tobin Mori, ee captures that nostalgic, lo-fi, 2000s indie rock sound. “retrace” is one of my favorite songs of all time. Shout out Perfectly Imperfect for getting ee to play NYC.
  • Nightclub 101: Helen Sun
    • I’m pretty sure Helen Sun’s song “Shiny kindness” off her debut EP talk with your Teeth is a reference to the Silver Jews song “The Wild Kindness.” If that’s the case, major respect. David Berman’s wise words belong in the folds of bedroom pop. After the Helen Sun show, stay late for DJ sets by Total Recall 2, Alain C Montgomery, Requisit, and The Furniture Group.
  • Brooklyn Paramount: Peter Hook & The Light
    • Peter Hook has 1000% influenced the way I play both guitar and bass. The bassist of Joy Division and New Order’s chorus laden, melodic technique drives many of my favorite songs, like “Ceremony.” Peter Hook has his own band now, and though it’s not an iconic 80s post-punk band, it still sounds thoroughly Peter Hook (ifykyk).
