Live Show Round Up 9/08 – 9/14

Monday Sept. 8th:

  • Central Park SummerStage: Rilo Kiley
    • Rilo Kiley closes their run of NYC shows at SummerStage this Monday. Throughout these columns I’ve unapologetically expressed my love for Rilo Kiley and this isn’t the time to surrender. I can’t think of anything better than Pictures of Success live in Central Park.
  • Elsewhere: Unwound
    • 30 years of The Future of What… and the future became Unwound. Though my favorite Unwound album is Fake Train, the Future of What still has that classic Unwound distorted DIY sound, crackling with energy, tearing at the seams.

Tuesday Sept 9th:

  • Footlight Presents at The Windjammer: Saom NYC x Phase Zero presents Experiments with Sound
    • Experimental sounds at the Windjammer Tuesday night. Amorphous and intangible, I have no idea what to expect. And that’s the point.
  • Webster Hall: The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Cast (ex-The La’s)
    • Methodrone is one of my favorite albums of all time. I cannot guarantee that the ever-producing, prolific Brain Jonestown Massacre will play any songs off this album live (the band’s released over twenty studio albums since their debut) but I’d take any chance to see the infamous Anton Newcombe in the flesh.
  • National Sawdust: Just Mustard
    • I saw Just Mustard open for Fontaines D.C on the Skinty Fia tour in 2022. Immediately obsessed, I played I Am You the next day on my college radio show and posted a selfie with Seed on my Instagram story taken outside of Mood Ring. I regret nothing. Just Mustard continues to put out noisy shoegaze subject to impulses of inertia . Listen to their two new singles POLLYANNA and WE WERE JUST HERE
  • AC15 @ Night Club 101: Lulu Van Trapp, Promiseland, SUO
    • Night Club 101. The kickoff of ALT CITIZEN’s 15 year anniversary show. Be there. Live performances by Lulu Van Trapp (Paris based, debuting in NYC), Promiseland, SUO, and D. Treut hosted by ALT CITIZEN editor Brittany Marino. After the show, head to the after party downstairs hosted by Quentin of IPC, a Paris based publisher for a DJ set by Stella Mandala.

Wednesday Sept 10th:

Thursday Sept 11th:

  • MoMA PS1 NYC Art Book Fair: voyeur, Sydney Spann, Lydo
    • The New York Art Book Fair, organized by Printed Matter, is back at MoMA PS1 from September 11th to the 14th. Celebrate the fair’s opening night of more than 250 local and international artists’ book publishers from 7–10 PM with music sets by Lydo, Sydney Spann, and voyeur.
  • AC15 @ Night Club 101: Swear Tapes, Certain Death, Croaker
    • It’s not whiplash… AC15 is back at Night Club 101 for “The Return.” As part of ALT CITIZEN’s 15 year anniversary series hear live performances by Swear Tapes, Certain Death, and Croaker. Hosted by Matthew Donovan.

Friday September 12th:

  • Kings Theatre: Ethel Cain, 9million
    • Ethel Cain dropped her second album of the year, Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You earlier this month. Dazed writes that the LP “feels closer to a cinematic soundtrack than a standalone album” and they’re pretty much on the nose. Head to Kings Theatre to hear Hayden Silas Anhedönia’s expansion of the Ethel Cain universe, a southern gothic narrative that I need reddit to truly understand.
  • Baby’s All Right: Wombo, Shower Curtain
    • Wombo’s new album Danger in Fives melds their classic indie/post punk sound with electronics; songs like Reveal Dusty sound relatively feeble little horse-ish. Ableton echoes through the mix. Don’t miss the opener, Shower Curtain’s words from a wishing well was one of my favorite releases of 2024.
  • AC15 @ Baby’s All Right: Jaie Gon Live, Rare DM, MoMA PS5 x Rex DeTiger B2B
    • Stick around Baby’s post Wombo + Shower Curtain for the “Late Night” of ALT CITIZEN’S 15 Year Anniversary Series. Live performances by Jai Gon Live, Rare DM, plus a special B2B from Rex DeTiger and MoMa PS5.
  • The Warsaw: Model/Actriz
    • Model/Actriz trades cataclysmic, raucous noise for a matured sound in Pirouette, the follow up to the critically acclaimed Dogsbody. Throughout the LP, vocalist Cole Haden’s lyricism is raw, “All I wanted was to be beautiful” to “carry me where my tears return as poppies in a field.” In Pirouette, listeners are let into a once guarded room of Haden’s psyche.

Saturday September 13th:

Sunday September 14th:

  • AC15 @ Market Hotel: Computerwife, Epoxy, Push Ups, Quiet Luke (DJ)
    • It’s the send off, the finale, the icing on the cake. AC15 ends its show series with live performances by Computerwife, Push Ups, Epoxy, plus a DJ set by Quiet Luke. Hosted by Jojo and Isabella.
