Live Show Update 7/13 – 7/19

Mon. 7/13

  • Elsewhere: Wombo, shower curtain
    • This Monday, indie rock band Wombo is playing the Elsewhere rooftop. It’s not a free show this time around, but you’ll still get to watch the sunset above East Williamsburg, sip on a frozen cocktail, and rock out to “Dreamsickle” live.
  • Nightclub 101: Bedridden, Bones Forever, untitled freak
    • You may not know it, but Bedridden members Wesley and Nick are behind the planning and operations of rocknite.ny. This week the two’s band is headlining rocknite. Organizing shows for the community, playing in their own sick rock band… head to Nightclub 101 to support your friends and local scene.

Tues. 7/14

  • TV EYE: Hunx and His Punx, Tea Eater
    • It’s been thirteen years since Hunx and His Punx’s released their debut album Street Punk. Since then, member Shannon Shawand’s fiance was killed in a car crash and the band’s new recordings were destroyed in the Eaton Fires. But, nothing stops Hunx and His Punx: the band dropped Walk Out On This World a year ago and two singles in May.

Weds. 7/15

  • Bowery Ballroom: Buck Meek
    • Love’s maturation, phases, and constant pulse are the backbone to Buck Meek’s new album The Mirror. The Big Thief member brings his own approach to indie folk, all while bringing friends, family, and longtime collaborators into his project.
  • Union Pool: Or Best Offer, Raybody, Calder the Destroyer
    • Or Best Offer, the experimental post-rock project of Grace Schmidhauser and Brian Culligan, produced the entirety of Center in a Ridgewood basement. It’s been two years since the album’s release, so make your way to Union Pool to hear some new material.

Thurs. 7/16

  • Elsewhere: WU LYF, Infinity Knives, Brian Ennals
    • English rock band WU LYF are evasive. With limited press engagement and no social media presence,  the band’s new album A Wave That Will Never Break, following their 2011 release Go Tell Fire to the Mountain, can only be found on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. But, mystery does create intrigue: the band’s Elsewhere show is almost sold out.
  • Music Hall of Williamsburg: Lip Critic, fantasy of a broken heart, Public Circuit
    •  Remember when Lip Critic hosted a series of shows with Perfectly Imperfect around the city for the release of Theft World? Now, the band is on their US tour and making their much anticipated NYC stop. Get ready for some cacophonous, unpredictable music.
  • DM for address: Heading, Doris, Sledding, Violet Beller
    • It doesn’t get more summer than a backyard show. Following a series of readings by Jack Degenhart, Venus Fischer, Gabriel Morgan, Jake Rothschild, and Annika Suderburg, Heading, Doris, Sledding, and Violet Beller will each play short sets. Marrying written word and live music, this bill oscillates between moments both loud and quiet.

Fri. 7/17

  • Baby’s All Right: Sloppy Jane, Grumpy, Pierre, Nicolette Miller (DJ)
    • Sloppy Jane hasn’t released any music since her avant album Madison in 2021. In the past five years, there is no telling the direction Sloppy Jane headed. You’ll have to go to Baby’s yourself to find out.
  • TV EYE: Cola, PARKiNG
    • Cola’s bright post-punk sound is present throughout the band’s new album Cost of Living Adjustment. But, the reason I’d head to this show is to see PARKiNG. The Louisville based art rock band’s album PORTRAiTS is full of droning strings and distorted guitars; it makes you feel like you are on the precipice of something meaningful. If you can’t make this show, Cola and PARKiNG are also playing at Nightclub 101 Saturday night
  • Nightclub 101: 1LDK
    • 1LDK is both a Japanese real estate term for a one-bedroom apartment and the name of Amsterdam’s latest up-and-coming indietronica act. The duo, made up of Goos Dijkstra and Yiqing Yan, treats language as a sonic instrument, weaving together French, Chinese, English, and Dutch across their new LP Spring Dream
  • Union Pool: Ok Cowgirl, Wetsuit, Debbie Dopamine
    • Americana band Ok Cowgirl’s sophomore album Rhinestone Cowgirl is being released at the end of August. Put on your cowboy boots, throw on some spurs, and go to Union Pool to hear Ok Cowgirl’s new music before it drops. Yeehawwwwwww!
  • Forest Hills: Djo
    • Joe Keery is hot. And you know what? Keery is more than Steve Harrington the “Demogorgon Slayer,” his music is pretty good too. Listen to Djo’s last album The Crux before the show.

Sat. 7/18

  • Maria Hernandez Park: 95 Bulls, Firstsex
    • Free punk show in Maria Hernandez. This Saturday, 95 Bulls and Firstsex’s riotous, unconstrained punk music will be the backtrack to the farmers market, Metro World Kids’ Sunday sermon, and the usual Bushwick crowd picnicking.
  • Rockaway Hotel: Allah-las
    • There is no better way to close a beach day than with live music. In the Allah-las upcoming album Sirenas, the band infuses Balearic beats and psychedelic rock into their usual, surfy sound. Taking inspiration from Brian Eno’s idea of treating creativity as a receptive state, Sirenas is less structured than the Allah-las prior work; it meanders instead of sprinting to a final destination.

Sun. 7/19

  • Baby’s All Right: First Day Back, gapyear
    • First Day Back is making some of the best emo music out there. Melodic, honest, and fourth wave inspired, Forward is the product of making music with your best friends. If you have time earlier in the day, First Day Back is playing the Numero Group pop up at 1pm.
