Live Show Update 8/10 – 8/16

Mon. 8/10:

  • Nightclub 101: Calder the Destroyer, Swim Rest, Trash Rabbit
    • You know the drill by now: it’s rocknite at Nightclub 101. If you need to know anything about this bill, it’s that each band features a strong vocal performance. Though the genres may differ, compelling vocal melodies carry each project.

Tues. 8/11:

  • Nightclub 101: Still Rings, Me At Night, Olive Bernard
    • If you’re like most people living in Bushwick and love Chanel Beads, Townes Van Zandt, and Alex G; listen to Still Rings. The band blends acoustic folk with elements of classic hypnagogic bedroom project sounds across their album Death of a Hummingbird. To get a taste, listen to “Apocalypse.”

Weds. 8/12:

Thurs. 8/13:

  • Knockdown Center: clipping., SPELLLING, Shabazz Palaces
    • clipping., the experimental hip-hop project of actor/rapper Daveed Diggs is heading to Knockdown Center on their summer tour. Though Diggs saw great success following his performance in Hamilton, clipping. actually began in 2009. That’s right…Diggs was rapping before Lin Manuel Miranda even thought of writing the Hamilton script.
  • Warsaw: Yard Act
    • There seems to be a trend of UK-based post-punk bands trading their unpolished sound for a palatable, brit-pop inspired feel. First we lost Fontaines D.C., now Yard Act. The band’s new album You’re Gonna Need A Little Music is lighthearted and clean: no political commentary, no pulsing basslines, zero aggression. Everyone wants to be Oasis.

Fri. 8/14:

  • Nightclub 101: forty winks, The Heaven, Ringing
    • If you mess with the Philadelphia scene, make sure to see forty winks play at Nightclub 101. With roots in Philly, the noise rock band’s lush distortion and mathy riffs create a sound inspired by contemporaries Feeble Little Horse, Sword II and TAGABOW. Their EP Love Is a Dog From Hell is a must listen.
  • Stone Circle Theatre: Horse Jumper of Love, Babehoven, Carol
    • This Friday, Horse Jumper of Love is playing a solo set at Stone Circle Theatre. Dimitri Giannopoulos, the vocalist and guitarist of HJOL, will size down the band’s signature slowcore sound to one that is more personal; one that is equally as powerful.
  • 60-47 Myrtle Ave Ridgewood: Anastasia Coope, Louisa Tantillo, Watergh0st
    • An evening devoted to the artistry of stringed instruments. Anastasia Coope, Louisa Tantillo (of Autobahn), and Watergh0st are bringing their cello work to DADA, an artist owned cafe and art space in Ridgewood. All I’m saying is that the coolest projects of the moment feature a cello…

Sat. 8/15:

  • Elsewhere: Born At Midnite, Paycheque, Sara Devoe
    • Montreal-based “faux-vanity” project Born At Midnite employs samplers, fake drums, and a tape machine in their debut album Eternal BAM Nation to create a Tame Impala-esque, pop feel. The band describes their music as “post-party,” and their album 1000% exudes a dancey vibe.
  • Mercury Lounge: Mila Culpa, People I Love, Herr God, Untitled Freak
    • Mila Culpa’s new single “Costume” stays true to her digital, glitched out warm shoegaze sound. The Tascam tape machine master “took a bunch of horse medicine” while making the song, and you can feel the dissociation in every riff. This show also has People I Love on the bill, who recently released their album Window to Another World

Sun. 8/16:

  • Pianos: Aitis Band, Epoxy, Clone
    • When I put on Aitis Band’s track “He’s Great,” the first thing I thought was “this sounds like New Order.” The band definitely loves Peter Hook (and I do too). This show is free, so don’t miss it.
