I missed out on Miss June and I’m really sad about it

I’d left my camera at home and had to run around in the rain to snatch it up, making me late for another interview and also kind of momentarily manic. I couldn’t even stay for the show to see them play. Little did I know what a huge thing I was missing out on.

To be straight, going into this last-minute meetup with Miss June I hadn’t quite had a chance to listen to them. Not because they aren’t making a name for themselves and opening for an impressive and oddly diverse roster of bands including IDLES, Wolf Alice, Shellac, and Foo Fighters. I just have my head so stubbornly wedged underneath a rock, I guess. Ever since listening to them after the fact and reading up on them(?) I’m super stoked on what they’ll do with French Kiss Records backing them up. They’re like if Surfbort and Sleater Kinney and Sonic Youth and — I don’t know, a unicorn — had an attractive, badass baby.

…I’ll be keeping my ear to the ground for the next time these New Zealand kids will be in town all the way from Aukland.

Heading immediately to the taco truck for a post-soundcheck meal, Anabelle, Tom, Chris, and Jun were all a bit sleepily but sincerely apologetic about being too hungry to jump right into it. Everything was covered in puddles from the sudden storm and a little bit blue, but I could tell that these four knew what they were doing in front of any kind of audience — even when it was just me with a knockoff Polaroid camera in their faces.

The sun finally decided to show up and any doubt that Miss June are anything but superstars on the rise was quickly squashed.

Listen to them on Spotify, follow them on Instagram and Facebook, and fall in love. Don’t miss out like me!
