Music Discovery is Everything: A Playlist by Amelia Debruge

You can spot photographer and storyteller Amelia Debruge — who I’ve officially dubbed “Grid Lord” — front row with her point-and-shoot, likely in a pretty dress, documenting the NYC music scene in real time. Her work moves between live show captures, single + album art, backstage intimacy, and the kind of candid moments that somehow become history later. Her current roster of muses includes NYC front women Truman Flyer, Soft, Valley Latini, Slav Sisters, and a rotating cast of downtown characters. On set I refer to her as my David Lynch, always drawn to emotional texture and the magic hidden inside fleeting moments. Amelia has a gift for capturing time in a way that feels playful, chaotic, tender, and cinematic all at once. Her photos and videos feel like lost scenes from the story of us.

Alongside her is Mimzy, her leather bunny sidekick and unofficial downtown mascot, often appearing on ALT CITIZEN stories while accompanying Amelia through late-night adventures, city life debauchery, and travels abroad. Curious to learn more about the music that shapes her world and informs her distinct visual language, I asked her to put together a “Music Discovery is Everything” playlist for us. Enjoy!
