One of the things I miss most about live music is all the amazing people you would meet at the gigs. Depending on the show or the band the same people could pop up across the country (or globe) at multiple different venues at multiple different times of your life. This overarching thing though, music, and particularly live music, repeatedly brought a strangely interconnected group of strangers together and allowed friendships that can span a lifetime to be born.
Subtext is a result of that sort of phenomenon. A group of friends from all over joined together to share their thoughts, feelings, and memories in an intimate and honest way. The collage zine came out with its first issue during quarantine and beautifully details perspectives on art and culture, shares personal essays, and is a time capsule of joy and struggle during what was a tumultuous year. The zine is gearing up for their next issue — Submerge — and are currently seeking submissions for both art and written features. You can find out more info on that via their Instagram.
In true Subtext fashion, we sent some notes back and forth with an added collage element. You can check out our conversation below.
