Soundtracked: Music, News, And More Week of February 12

Sorry for the very belated posting everyone. I had plenty of Valentine’s Day duties to attend to this past week. Not to worry, there was still some great and interesting things going on in music (not everyone halts working for romance) that you may have missed! Check them out below, click on album covers to listen on Spotify.

Listen:

My favorite release of the week was Fear of Men’s Early Fragments. It’s not always that a typically indie pop album stands out to me. But tracks “Mosaic,” “Born,” and “Ritual Confession” were immediate favorites. So what makes the album stand out though it’s from a (let’s face it) pretty generic genre? The lyrics in Early Fragments, albeit simple, stand out because dammit, the songs are just catchy as hell. They are also surprisingly dark, I never thought a band would make me so excited to sing along to “hell is other people though.”

Pissed Jeans’ Honeys is a close second to being my favorite album. I was driving from Pennsylvania to NYC when listening to it. Let’s just say I was totally ready to blame the album for my speeding if I got pulled over. The album starts with “Bathroom Laughter” which is a speedball thrasher. “Chain Worker” reminds me of Nick Cave’s early days in The Birthday Party, with its droning and dueling guitars. Something about Honeys’ lyrical content also makes me want to describe this album as “punk for grown ups,” case in point “Health Plan.”

I could see  “Argonauts” from The Little Ones’ The Dawn Sang Along as a perfect song for summer or helping The Little Ones pay bills in commercials and TV shows. Other than that and “Little Souls” the album is probably better reserved for a day with actual sun and you know, a temperature higher than 38 degrees.

Indie punk band The Thermals released “Born to Kill” from their upcoming album. I fucking love it already.

Watch:

Joey Bada$$ and the equally (if not more) talented Big K.R.I.T. and Smoke DZA chill in subway tunnels and yes, it’s creepy but in the good way.

Read:

There will be a Bowie doc airing on the BBC in May!

In honor of Valentine’s Day, a bunch of musicians talked to MTV Hive about their first kiss. My favorite is Kitty’s story.

Rookie has a Galentine’s Day playlist, which would be awesome to listen to every day! (Except maybe skip that Taylor Swift song because it is just awful).

Random Nostalgia:

Enjoy Claire Danes’ cry face in its beginning stages here (starts at 6:00) and also go watch My So Called Life on Netflix like, now!
